MDJunction to me

saralaurie"In the 3 months I have been with MDJunction I have developed a sense of calmness. I now friends who do not judge me because I have been a mental mess at times. It is such a good feeling to have friends I can tell my deepest thoughts and always get back to me with their support. I have never seen a therapist for long periods of time. Right or wrong, this is the best therapy possible for me. Thanks Roy for getting this up and running and making such a difference in my life. Sara" (saralaurie)

I may have inquired about this previously, but I was looking for some input about this. Nothing can replace an in-person relationship, but for me personally, I am far more open when writing emails or posts or whatever in which I do not have to look at a person's reaction. That's my social anxiety I guess. And my embarrassment. So, do online sponsers exist, and what are the pros and cons? Is this just a stupid question?

I had an online sponsor in another 12 Step program and it worked out quite nicely, between email, chat, and phone calls. She is no longer my sponsor but we do stay in touch.

I don't think an online sponser would work for me. I need someone I can see in the flesh but I do understand the part of being free to say more than you may with a sponser on line.

No, your question is not stupid.

I've had an online sponsor, too. For me, it was OK, but not as helpful as the in-person sponsors I've had.

I get the impression that you anticipate negative responses from an in-person sponsor. Let me assure you that if you pick the right in-person sponsor, that doesn't happen. My in-person sponsors have always been compassionate, warm listeners when I've talked. One of the best things about being in a group of alcoholics (like at AA), is that eventually you learn that you haven't done anything worse than other people have done.

How would you feel about talking to a sponsor you've never met on the phone everyday? Would that help you get used to sponsorship? Do you have free long distance? Just a thought.

The bottom line for me is that any sponsor is better than no sponsor at all.

I have to run now, but I'll post a link to a thread about online sponsors.
