Hello everyone,

I hope today is a good day for all. My pdoc just added Topamax to my list of meds. I am on 25mg x 2 a day for a week and then it goes up to 50 x 2 then 75 mg x 2 then 100 x 2. I am on Geodon 160mg, Lamictal 200mg and lexapro 20 mg all at night. I am hoping I see some weight loss with the topamax. I have about 20 pounds to lose. Did anyone lose weight on Topamax and if so how much did you lose. I am hoping for a positive side effect for a change Tongue

Thanks and take care,

Connie

Lamictal 200 mg one in the morning one at night
Geodon 80mg at night
Welbutrin morning and night 150 mg one in morning and one at night
Lexapro 20 mg but lowering dose and will discontinue it soon

I started Topamax 3 years ago for migraine and dropped 35 pounds in about 4 months. I now struggle to keep my weight up, and hover at around 100 pounds. Watch out if you ONLY have 20 pounds to lose, as this med can be tricky. You can become anorexic. Be careful!

Thanks for responding. I will be careful like you suggested. I want to lose weight but I want to be healthy as well. I will eventually be on 200 mg a day and that seems a lot.

Thanks again,

Connie

I don't have any experience with Topomax but I have heard it causes weight loss for some people. I want to tell you WELCOME to our site because my system crashed and I haven't been able to talk with you yet. Just remember to monitor your weight loss and keep your pdoc informed of any changes. HUGS to you! Keep us posted.

Hello

My niece takes topamax but it is for her epilepsy and when she started taking it she lost 20 lbs in about 6 months time, she is only 9. Now we have to moniter her weight very closely but she pretty much maintains thankfully she was on the big side before so now she is on the normal side. Best of luck!

I must be the only one who hasn't lost weight on Topamax! I take 300 mg. a day and still struggle with my weight loss plan.

The biggest issues I've heard with my patients with Topamax (when I was practicing as a RN), was it made them dopey, ie, that is how the nickname for topamax is dopamax, the other bad effect, I worked with another RN who took topamax for migraines, and she head a major loss of hair. I take topamax occasionally when really unable to cope, but am afraid of the side effects to take it very often. Maybe I should give it a chance, I could stand to lose 30 pounds, (that I gained from taking psych meds)! I hate carrying extra weight, it is all in my belly. I look pregnant.

I'm an Advocate

I take Topamax for migraine prevention and have for years, my pdoc and neuro both dont feel its the best med for Bipolar but I guess time will tell for those trying it. Maybe mild cases it could be effective but I am not so sure about severe cases just like Neurontin has been proven to be not as effective. I luckily have never felt dopey on Topamax and also never lost or gained weight on it which the warning says it can go both ways. Thankfully my migraines stopped thats all I cared about. Wink
I suffer from Rapid Progressive MS, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Epilepsy, Migraines, Neuropathy, IBS, Narcolepsy, Arrythmia, Arthritis and too much more complete list on profile.

I'm not currently active due to many personal and medical issues. I will not be participating in MDJ for awhile, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone. I hope everyone is well and I appreciate all of the thoughts, kind words and messages. I have tried to respond as much as possible and apologize if I have not gotten back to everyone.
