My doctor suggested that I may be bipolar II and gave me a referral to a psychiatrist, who confirmed the diagnosis. At first I was relieved as I thought it would be a simple matter of taking the right pill and getting on with things.

I was so wrong.

I seemed to get worse on the medication as well as putting on weight - so far on 2 months I have put on 5 kg. I am trying to move onto Lamactil but apparently it can cause a potentially fatal skin rash, so slowly building up the dose. I am still on Zoloft (been taking this for years but have halved the dose) and am also taking seroquel.

I kbow that it takes time to figure out the dose, but I feel like I am taking so many pills I must rattle when I walk.

Is anyone else going through this or has gone through this?

Hey Missblossom,

Good to hear from you. I have to say my fairly recent diagnosis of BP2 was a big relief. After having tried just about every antidepressant known to mankind and having experiences ranging from slight relief at best to severe reactions at worst, it was good to know that my diagnosis was incorrect all these 20 some years--and that was with seeing a psychiatrist and a number of different therapists over time. Unbelievable! I'm on Lamictal and, other than experiencing fatigue, haven't had a problem and have had significant improvement. I, too, was concerned about the fatal rash (plus I have the added concern of potential muscle weakness aggravating my muscular dystrophy). However, my pdoc explained that the rash is relatively uncommon and your chances of getting it are lessened if you titrate slowly. Did your doc give you a starter pack? That's a great way to start. Anyhow, I wish you luck with your meds, an in-bumpy road to recovery and peace of mind. I don't know how long you've been a member here but I've found it to be a great place for support, identification with others' experiences, and a place for answers.

Be gentle with yourself,

Todd

It has taken me a year of med trials to finally find the right med cocktail. Lamictal has helped me so much and the rash is extremely well. I hope it works for you!

I have been on Lamictal since the first of November. I found a new pdoc and he changed my meds (a lot of them). He added Seroquel and Lamictal for example. Since then we have added and taken away and I feel like I'm finally getting some positive momentun. I take a lot of meds (as you can see below in my signature) and I feel like a walking lab experiment. It's hard to accept and hard to get used to, but once you get used to it, it just becomes habit.

I have also been thru many drugs, but I finally have a combo that's working. I too feel like a walking pharmacy, but the results that I get from taking the pills make it all worth it. It's amazing that those tiny little pills can make such a difference in my life!
My opinions are just opinions, and should be taken as such. I am not an expert on medicines or BP disorder.

Hang in there because when you do find the right mix of medications, it's totally worth it. It's trial and error for awhile. Things can and will get better. I take a lot of pills too and it is annoying having to take them, but I'm very grateful for them. They are the reason I am stable. Keep trying till you get it right. You will get there. There is a lot of support here, so we'll work through this with you. You will like it here. Welcome to the group!

I can only 2nd what others have already said, that it can take time to get the meds adjusted that are right FOR YOU, but my opinion is that if you are BP2, it is more than worth it in the long run. I was misdiagnosed for many years, and then resisted the diagnosis for even more time, but now that I have been on meds for more than 18 months I am very grateful to not have to live like that anymore.

Glad you are here!

Welcome to the group! It took me over a year to get my meds right. It was very frustrating, but there is hope. I take about 14 pills not including the prns (I have about 4 lung diseases). The meds in my signature work, though, so I'm not going to worry about all the pills.

Abilify 10 mg

Bupropion XL 450 mg
Clorazepate 30 mg (for anxiety)
Trazodone 300 mg prn (for sleep)
Xanax .5 mg prn (for anxiety and sleep)

Welcome. I am one of those people who are so grateful for the meds I am on. I almost could care less how many it takes because after being diagnosed with just depression and getting such little relief I am finally feeling better than I pretty much ever remember feeling. Hang in there it is so worth finding that right combo for you.
