I am sensitive to caffeine in general and now with my medications I need to avoid caffeine all together. I enjoyed a soda and even coffee once and awhile.

I found a de-caf coffee I love but Im finding that Im craving soda more now that I can't have it. When I do have a soda now Im up all night and Im very irritable.

I guess I'm having a hard time dealing with the lifestyle changes that comes with BP.

:igh:: Any advice?

hey CJ, you know don't you that coke and pepsi both have a caffeine free version. You can get it caffeine free and sugar free, buy one and see how you like it. While it won't be as good tasting as the "regular" you can develop a taste for it.

I'm a diabetic, so I drink diet drinks, took me a bit, but I got use to the taste and now a regular soda tastes to sweet to me.

Carmen, Yes I do know that there are caffeine free versions but I dislike the tastes so much.

I guess I'm more hung up on the lifestyle changes. I never thought being BP II would force me to change my diet.

Your right about the lifestyle changes, I never thought it would either, I haven't changed mine much beyond what I have had too over the diabetes, diet drinks, de-caf drinks and yogurt to me are all acquired tastes, it takes a while to get use to them.

My Husband who is a walking sweet tooth has finally been able to switch to a diet drink most of the time, he can drink Diet Dr. Pepper, but still doesn't like the pepsi or coke.

Have you talked with your doctor about what could be causing this feeling if you drink caffeine? it could be reacting to your meds.

I haven't spoken to any of my doctors about my craving for caffeine, I just assumed I want it more because I can't have it. It's kind of human nature isn't it?

Ive found replacement drinks to have when I want a soda. But I think its more in my head than a craving. I dont know how to cope with changing all these things.

hey CJ, it's kinda a double edged sword, while we want what we can't have or should not have, we can also be addicted to caffeine as much as Nicotine, have you noticed any headaches since you quit it? if so, this is why, the body is detoxing off the caffeine.

Baby steps is all I can really recommend, and I would still discuss it with your doctor about the reaction you have from the caffeine/medication mix..

I don't have too much problems with caffeine, but I have noticed since I quit drinking and drugging that my caffeine intake has lessened, if I drink a lot of caffeine, I don't sleep well that night if at all, and I will get clenching of the jaws, but this was there too even prior to the medications.

If you really want a soda, split one with someone, that way you don't have that much, you get the craving out of the way, and then you can start adding a day or two between them.

But do talk with your doctor. Ok?

I did talk to my doctors about it, and we found multiple ways to get around the caffeine and nicotine addiction. Which made me very happy and hopeful. I feel much stronger now that I have so many Plan B's.

One of the plans is so split a soda with someone like you said, and I'm going to do that in the future.

I'm much more hopeful in coping with the changes BP brings now! =)

Good for you CJ, I haven't had any problems when it comes to food and Bipolar, although I have found that my ability to deal with stress has been seriously lessened, since July, it's still like I am raw..

I have been type 1 diabetic for over 8 yrs now and to be honest I smoke a bit under a pack a day. Up until my diagnosis I was drinking approximately 3-4 liters of diet soda a day. Yes that's right at least 2- 2 liter bottles of the caffeine stuff! When I wound up in the stabilization ward for a week, I quit drinking it cold turkey. And guess what? I don't miss it at all. In fact although I still need to drink something flavored I rediscovered two things that I had not drank in over 20 yrs. Now I drink 3-4 glasses of milk per day and when I want something else I drink (and please don't laugh too hysterically) sugar free KoolAid. No caffeine and it really quenches. Otherwise try Crystal Light. I forgot how much I loved those drinks and it is definitely a healthy choice. When we go out to eat I ask for ice water with lemon, squeeze the lemon and add some of the blue or yellow stuff. Great sugar-free lemonade.

That is a lot of soda, i drink on the average, 3 to 4 can's per day, and some days not even that much, now milk on the other hand, I go through spurts, somedays I will down a 1/2 gallon or more, and others i might not even have any, haven't had koolaid in ages, not because of not liking it, just because i forget to get some at the store, now the water flavors, those I am drinking a lot of, can't stand the taste of what they call water now adays, we have a filter on the fridge so I can get fresh tasting water and cold too.
