It is somewhat helpful for my depression (when I get it anymore). It doesn't quite tackle my hypomania and mania (whoops! Sorry. I'm bp1). Pdoc had to add a lot more for that and I'm still unbalanced in the more desirable direction. Good luck with it. The side effects aren't as bad as people say.
Bipolar 1, Simple Partial Seizures, and migraines

Psychiatric meds:

Lithium ER (900 mg)*Tegretol XR (1400 mg)*Lamictal (100 mg)*Geodon (160 mg)*Navane (5 mg)*Seroquel XR (100 mg)*Klonopin (.5 mg)

Ativan 1 mg "as needed" (I rarely take it.)*Seroquel regular 50 mg "as needed" (Only if I'm getting elevated.)

Other meds:

Propranolol (40 mg)*Levothyroxine (150 mcg)

My mix is side effect friendly for me.

I've had it help with both hypomania and Depression but then after a few months I started to have cognitive issues related to it and had to go off.

I was on it for awhile and it really helped my moods but made me very tired and gain weight. Had to stop taking it.

Ahhh!!! I see pdoc tomorrow and I know lithium is going to be the main topic of conversation. I want to try something different, but everyone says they had to stop taking it, got fat, ruined their hair, slowed them down.... I don't want to be the stubborn patient who doesn't want any meds!!!

Everyone's chemistry is different. It's worth trying out to see if it works.

For me a side effect is insomnia. I think that might be the opposite of what happens to most people. I tend to have severe depression alternating with mild depression and haven't take it long enough to know how it affects that. If my moods stable enough to not have the severe depression it will be worth it.

Good luck to you since everyone is different.

I would speak to your pdoc. You can't go on feeling sick like that it's no way to live either and that feeling should have gone away after a couple of weeks of being on your current dose. Stick with it until you speak to your pdoc, don't do anything without his/her ok though (I think).
