Can Topamax cause depression, or make it worse? have been taking it for about 2 months now, was taking sodium valproate but my psych took me off it because of the weight gain. I take cipramil as an antidepressant. Really struggling but I don't want to change meds AGAIN.

Topomax really affected my cognition and made me feel so sick that I had to go off it--I felt depressed because of the side effects but that happened within a few weeks of being on it--so it is possible from my perspective.

@ celtic girl - i was on topomax years ago for my mood swings it does make you really "unalert" and kinda stupid - i would forget all sorts of things, like my mouth knew what i wanted to say but my brain processed it to slow and when i did speak sometimes i couldnt pronounce my words correctly - once i got use to it being in my system those symptoms went away, and i think the best thing about that drug was it helped me loose tons of weight, it's probaly one of ther reasons your doctor put you on this drug, good luck

I would like to hear more replies about this med because my pdoc was talking about putting me on it next time I see her in two weeks. I was on it in the past, but all I recall about it was that I had some odd sensory things like my hands felt like things were bigger than they really were, if that makes any sense? Also like a tingly feeling in my hands sometimes.

From my experience with topamax, I had severe depression. I hated the drug. I became depressed and my cognative skills went out the window. I stopped taking it about a month ago.

Topamax has caused memory problems, and I feel spaced out, but I felt like that the first few months of taking sodium valproate. Eventually my body adjusted. But the depression is worrying. Started to have very dark thoughts again. And rage. I will ask my psych doc if I can decrease the dosage and see if that helps. So tired of this, I just want to be like everyone else.

I have rarely heard good things about it, to be honest I am surprised it is even on the market.

I'm an Advocate

I was told by my doctor that Topomax can cause or exacerbate depression.

I think Topomax is a good drug for many people. I was on very high dose of it for years (400mg a day) to treat my overweight, bipolar and severe migraines. Any memory or cognitive problems I initially had with it pretty much resolved after being on it a while. I'm off of it now simply because almost all of my meds have been changed.

Bipolar II, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, Agoraphobia & PTSD; Alcoholic in recovery since 3/21/07.

Aplenzin 522mg; Pristiq 200mg; Lamictal 400mg; Geodon 160mg; Ativan 1mg TID; Deplin 15mg; Xanax PRN; Metoprol 100mg.

Taking a fairly low dose right now. I have been doing well I have had slight recall issues, but nothing terrible. I see my Pdoc next week and I am going to talk to her about some breakthrough anxiety and obsessive thinking. I expect a tweak of some sort. Best of luck to you.

Folks, EPS is a hell of a side effect, just make sure the meds you are taking do not have this side effect because it's irreversible. Most meds do not have these side effects. But you never know with the new ones.

However, DO NOT ABRUPTLY STOP TAKING TOPAMAX!!!! These meds are also anti-seizure medications and can cause EPILECTIC SEIZURES, NOT EFFIN GOOD. Any anti-seizure medication, which is also used in conjuction with bipolar/depression therapeutic meds can cause this and eff u up majorily when u stop it without tapering it.

Honestly, I am antimeds, but it helps me function. Topamax does make me feel like a dumbass and talk slow at times, but I have managed to stay on the deans list and I am on it because of my migraines. I also lost tons of weight while on it, but I also exercise.

Thanks for posting your comment, I am going to talk to my doctor when I get some cash about taking me off Topamax. I get bouts of depression alot. I have degrees in psych, however, I am into cognitive psych, not overmedicating people and prescribing meds only as last resort. In state of California, mental institutions and prison, medication is considered the most restrictive type of restraint. I take meds because I feel like a lost cause. I hope they don't delete ur post. Freedom of speech baby!!! Smile
