MDJunction to me

tomboykimi"What MD Junction means to me is a place where i can feel like im not alone. As someone with something as rare as hydrocephalus, it feels like im the only one in the world with it. When i came to MD, its like everyone has it. It doesnt feel like im alone. And that people need to hold up a sign to say what i have, because people know. And they understand. I can get questions answered from people who have been through it rather than from doctors or people who only can tell you from a physical standpoint. THat is what MD junction means to me." Bipolar II ForumsGeneral & SupportBipolar Disorder NOS (296.8)?

So I just went to get my blood work done and noticed a diagnosis of 296.8. I ddn't know what that was but my good friend Google helped me out. 296.8 = Bipolar Disorder NOS. Here is a pretty consistent description.

Bipolar Disorder, NOS (296.8)

This classification is included in the DSM to enable mental health professionals to diagnose disorders with bipolar features that do not meet criteria for any of the defined bipolar disorder subtypes (as described above). For instance, a person who rapidly alternates (over days) between manic and depressive symptoms may be classified under this category. Recurring hypomanic episodes without interim depressive symptoms can lead to this diagnosis as well. A clinician may label a person with bipolar disorder, NOS when he or she suffers from manic or mixed episodes that appear to be part of a delusional disorder, residual schizophrenia, or psychotic disorder that is also difficult to classify.

The NOS diagnosis is also sometimes used provisionally, when doctors do not feel they have enough information yet to make a proper diagnosis, but wish to document their impression that a condition is an instance of bipolar disorder.

Now when I first went to my current pdoc a year ago in part I went for second opinion and he agreed with my first pdoc. BPII w/severe depression. It seemed to fit and it took quite a few months to kind of settle into it. Now out of the blue and without him saying a word about changing the diagnosis here it is.

It seems to me like it's a cop out diagnosis and may play into what I've been thinking of late. That I just need to get back to where I was before all this nonsense started. Live with being depressed now and again and get on with my life.

Anybody out there with experience with this seemingly toothless diagnosis?

I'm not at all a happy camper,

bdr

bdr,

I'd talk to your p-doc about that. Maybe over time with the symptoms presented during appt's, the dx changed a bit. BP NOS is just a label right?

And I've told you all I've gotten three labels thus far. My code is now 296.60, which I think from what I remember is kinda similar, but I have to look it up again.

My doc was straight forward in thinking I have BPI disorder from what I told her (one hospitalization, attempted to OD, one mixed episode, etc). All I know for sure is I have the disorder not matter what category it's in, but I'd make a note as a word of advice to explore this further with your doc.

And if anyone else has any advice, feel free to chime in.

Unspecified--That part I don't like, but there are good parts to the mental health field and bad parts....I'm just glad we live in a time where things are MUCH better than they used to be despite the stigma.

I'll have to say that I'm one of the worst kinds of patients b/c I know too much educationally, professionally and personally, LOL!

Of course, I'm still learning a few things...I don't know it all and neither do some of the professionals at times.

Basically what I'm saying is believe what you believe to be true bdr; don't take it for face value, especially since the meds treat both types. I know I write a lot and have too many thoughts going on at timesTongue

Thanks Jessy. It is just a label and I don't have a problem with that. My problem is 2 fold. It's a very vague label which causes me to question the competence of my pdoc and he changed the diagnosis without telling me. I like to think I'm a full blown partner in this. He also changed his mind based on rudimentary conversations during 15 minute appointments every 6 to 10 weeks. You can bet your bottom dollar I'll be talking with him very soon. Like Monday. Smile

Thx,

bdr

No prob bdrSmile Do what you gotta do. Either talk to him first about what happened or switch to another one. That would be my other two cents.

So this is a little embarrassing. It's a very long story, too long for a post but the bottom line is I saw the code on a blood work order. The blood work order was called in as simply "bipolar" and the biller had to put a code in and since there was nothing specific provided to them other than bipolar they chose the non specific code of 296.8. Being in a a bit of a manic phase right now things just kind of spiraled in my mind. Doh!

Insurance companies..

I'm just a goofy as always,
