Hello I was wondering if anyone is taking Niacin or any other natural herbs and what you're experience has been. I have high cholesterol and been diagnosed with type II bipolar so I suffer from depression. I had heard that Niacin was good for both reducing high cholesterol and for depression.

I started taking 250 ml per day and noticed I was having a lot more manic episodes.

I liked the energy but nearly destroyed my marriage with the manic behavior.

So I stopped taking the niacin.

Has anyone else had this experience? Do you have any recommendations for natural remedies?

Thanks

I was taking niacin for a while and when I got my second set of results back on my cholesterol, I stopped taking it. I didn't notice any energy increase but you saying additional manic episodes...I may have experienced some. I don't remember now.

Do you have low good cholesterol and high bad cholesterol??? If you have good or high good cholesterol..you don't need to lower your cholesterol levels. There are different types of cholesterol and if the good numbers are good, don't treat the bad.

Also docs fail to tell us that cholesterol is genetic and our diets. Cut out sugars (carbohydrates) and your numbers will improve. It isn't eggs and meat that kill our cholesterol numbers...it is bread, pasta and sugar.

I'm not one for natural medications, so I can't be of a lot of help there. Why don't you take pharmaceutical medications? They really help stabilize you. I am stable because of them. They really help. I know they are chemicals, but we have a chemical imbalance and the medications correct this imbalance. I hope you consider going on these medications. Life is so much easier now. Welcome to the group. You will get a lot of support here!

I am taking Vitamin D and it has given me much relief from my chronic ankle pain. I don't have to take as much pain meds.

Hi Thanks for the quick response.

@Joy: I don't have any problems with pharmaceuticals. I believe in better living through chemistry. I am seeing a psychiatrist and am on Lamotrogine and Citalopram. Just trying to figure out ways I can get my cholesterol under control.

@zookpr: I have low good cholesterol and high bad cholesterol. The doctors are concerned that the medicine I am taking may have a negative effect on my cholesterol as well. I have been labs every three months, but can't seem to get my bad cholesterol levels down. I have been watching my diet and exercising. I keep hearing that carbs are trouble. I have definitely cut down but haven't cut them out entirely.

I think a good b complex in addition to meds is very important, the body gets depleted from meds so everyone should have b complex at least.

The whole carb thing gets me what the doctors won't tell you is that these meds drop your blood sugar so you crave more carbs to push it back up again. That is why some of them can increase your risk of diabetes. We do have to be thankful for meds, but we can't turn a blind eye to the face that there aren't serious risks. I am reading about adrenal exhaustion it can cause panic and panic makes it worse its a double edged sord, but they are supplements for that. Everyone on here who has panic should look up adrenal disorders it all makes sense how can we ignore our bodies..............
