I've been talking with my therapist about utilizing the disability services at my college because of how my last semester went and how I think I could use some help and support etc. so I'm wondering, have any of you used these kind of services before?

I'm trying to come up with a list of things I think I would need/like and so far I have tests in a different room and extended time on tests and also having notes taken for me since I have trouble concentrating in class.

What things did/do you utilize that were helpful?

I'm working on my master's and I'm still struggling with whether or not to "come out" with my advisor. I got way behind last semester because I went off an antidepressant cold turkey (I couldn't get an appointment with my pdoc to get another prescription), so I completely crashed. I did get the work done, but it definitely wasn't as good as it could have been had I not been in the shape I was in. I don't know if it's this way or everyone, but I still have a hard time distinguishing what I can help from what I can't, and I think that's hindered me quite a bit.

Teachers also have their own notes. You might want to ask for them as well. Summarize each paragraph in a text book with one sentence - that helps to study and also helps to focus. Maybe you need preferential seating? If you sit in the front, maybe it will help you focus more as well. If you have trouble with scantrons (bubble sheets) and transferring your answer from the test/quiz to the bubble sheets, you may need what's called "Marks in Book" in the high school where I work. You wouldn't have to do that. I know I have trouble doing that as well because of focus and because of my dyslexia. I hope these suggestions help or at least get you thinking.

Well my therapist is going to send a letter with some accommodations and we'll see how everything goes.

Like you I also receive extended time on tests in a separate room (I get time and a half). I have the option of having a note taker but instead I got a smart pen (because they thought this technology would be more useful), in which I discovered that is by far more useful to have an actual person taking my notes.

I had an killer anxiety issue last semester so my therapist is recommending extra time on projects as well for this coming semester. I personally only use these accomedations when needed. I try my hardest to do the work as all the other students but sometimes things get a little overwhelming.

Lucky for me my therapist is located on my school campus and the supported services are in the same area, thus they have a good relationship with each other. My pdoc also recommended that I have these services, she as well has connection with my therapist on campus, so they all work together more or less.

Hope you get the services you need.
