Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there, who has been medicated for years on end, has had any trouble with their teeth. I'm starting to get cavities and it's going to end up costing me a fortune next time I see the dentist. I'm not afraid of the dentist and I have pretty good dental hygiene but in the last six months I've noticed that I've got four new cavities. Is it just me or has anyone else seen a softening of their enamel? I've been on too many different meds to mention, over 75 or so now, maybe more.

That is a possibility. I've only been on medications for 2 1/2 years though, so I don't notice any difference. That is a lot of cavities in six months though, I agree. I'm sorry that you have this problem especially when you take care of your teeth. I hope you get some answers. Good luck!

I have to use a night guard to protect against the grinding of my teeth. It's a combination of stress and the meds. I recently had to get it fixed because I cracked it while grinding.

I don't really have a problem with grinding but I do sort of tap my teeth together. It's a sort of nervous habit I have so maybe that has something to do with it. I'll be making an appointment with my dentist tomorrow so perhaps he knows if any of these drugs make your teeth softer or something like that. Who knows, it could well be that. We don't really know what these drugs are going to do to us in the long run and it's been a long time for me already. I'll ask the dentist and my psychiatrist about it and let you all know if that's the case anyway. It's the only thing I can think of but if nobody else has had the problem it could just be me. Maybe they make my saliva more acid or something stupid like that.

Thanks for posting some answers for me in any case. It was really making me curious, and that just makes me more nervous, and that's not something I need.

I read that lithium can weaken your teeth if you are on it for along time or in high doses.

Some of the medications make your mouth very dry. That is what happens with my meds. That can definitely cause you to get more cavities. I chew sugar free gum a lot. My dentist recommended I use a fluoride rinse too.
