I think they each target different neurotransmitters in different ways. I believe the stabilizers work on Dopamine. Anti-psch help with mania and stabilizers help with Depression.

What are some examples of common antipsychotics and mood stabilizers? I'm confused about what I'm taking.

For what it's worth:

lovebug1959:

I take 2 different antidepressants because they target different receptors in my brain. I have even been on 3. Boy, does it make a difference!! In addition, my antidepressants have mood stabilizing properties.

redphoenix:

I am not your pdoc, but usually the meds in your list are used to treat:

Seroquel - antipsychotic w/ mood stabilizing properties

Lamictal - technically an anticonvulsant, but well-known for successful treatment of bipolar -- it is commonly referred to as a mood stabilizer

Prozac - antidepressant (SSRI) (also used for OCD, panic/anxiety)

Wellbutrin - antidepressant w/ mood stabilizing properties

Lorazipam (Ativan) - a benzodiazapine - a type of anti-anxiety medication

Hope this is of some help. Smiles.

Yes, usually antipsychotics are prescribed for agitation. I was taught that Haldol, Zyprexa and Risperdal are technically antipsychotics that have mood stabilizing and anti-anxiety properties.

Yes, antidepressants are primarily for depression.

Lamictal stabilizes mood, mostly effective for mania or hypomania.

Your questions are good. But since they apply just to your own unique person, I think they are probably best answered by your own psychiatrist.

Bipolar is hard to treat. Pychotropic medications and their effects on on the brain are complex. PLUS, each individual has a unique response to each medication! There are only general "rules of thumb."

What I do when I get confused or want to get more out of my psychiatry visits is to bring in a short list of questions or goals. It sounds like you don't feel your meds are working. Giving your psychiatrist a list of your symptoms, or telling him/her what they are, is a great place to start.

It really sounds like you think your medications aren't working. I would bring that up with your psychiatrist. I take an anti-psychotic for my hypo-mania, a mood stabilizer to stabilize my moods of course, and an antidepressant for my depression. They all work together for me. I am stable. I would suggest that you write down all of your symptoms and show them to your psychiatrist. Have him address each one and tell you how he is going to take care of it so that you know. This way you won't be questioning anything. I really hope that you can get your medications straightened out. We are all here for you and will try our best to help you out. Sarah gave you a lot of good information.
