When I was first diagnosed bipolar and had pretty much alienated myself from friends, family and everything in between, a friend came over to my house one evening and handed me a piece of paper. I don't normally go for these self help stories and all that. I try, but I can't. But for some reason this one really resonated with me. You may have heard it before, but if you haven't, I had this stuck on my fridge for six months along with a sign that said "Stop running away".

The Two Wolves

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.

"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

I've heard this before and I love it! I think it sums up my thoughts and feelings surrounding my diagnosis perfectly.

I have never heard this before, but I love it. It makes total sense. It's a great short story and it describes the fight in us. Well, in anyone. Our fight is just a little harder. Thank you for sharing this with us.

My pleasure. As I said, I usually don't like these kinds of stories, but this one really did something.

My advice is free, completely anecdotal, and comes from my own experience. Always talk to your doctor before you change anything.
