Ok so I started the gym again yesterday after long 8 months and boy what a difference! I had forgotten how much it does.

It was the best day for me mentally for months. The moment you finish and are on your way home it's like "bing" you feel something changing. For the rest of the day I felt so light and happy.

It might not be able to replace medicine but I think it can still do as much. My conclusion is that EVERYONE with mental problems should exercise at least 3-4 times a week, or even daily if they can.

My plan now is to go 6 times a week, take a break on sundays Smile

I agree that it really helps. I also have to fess up that I haven't exercised in awhile. You're post is inspiring--maybe I'll actually do something physical today. Thanks for the reminder of how helpful it is to exercise when coping with bipolar.

I also forgot to mention that if you are having problems with sleep nothing helps more than exercise. It's strange it's like it gives you more energy in the day time but once it's nighttime you are more tired, so it balances it out to a more natural circle. First time in a long time I actually fell asleep before midnight and woke up early today.

Anyway I'm off to the gym second time now Smile cya around.

You are so right about the gym. May I ask your diagnosis? Be sure you are getting enough sleep. I am BP and I need 8 hours of sleep. I can tell you from experience, the endorphins are great, but do not let them mask the need for a full 8 hours of sleep.

I went through a 10 year period I went 2x a day to work out and taughte 20-25 spin classes a week, as well as doing personal training. I went to the extreme, and it caused a swing which took a while to medicate and to revamp my lifestyle.

I would suggest, start with 3-4 days and build up to 6. See where your balance is , it may not be 6 days a week. Just food for thought. Like I said the endorphins in combination with your meds is great but you walk a fine line.

Kudos on getting back to the gym. I lift 2x a week cardio three and I take 4 yoga classes a week.If you have not tried yoga I reccommend it, really connects body and mind.

Continue to feel well and you are defintely inspiring others to use exercise as part of staying well

I agree! Exercise does a lot physically and emotionally

is a great thing to do for any person with mental issues.

Well I only go for like 60-90 minutes a day which is why I don't think it's overdoing it going 6 times.

Bp-II and ADD here. Not sleeping enough has never been a problem, more like when I sleep (sometimes I **** [please no cursing Smile] it up and sleep in the daytime and am awake all night). But I always get my 8 hours.

I agree that exercise is great for mental illness. I need to get back into it. You are a great inspiration to others and you are doing well for yourself. Keep it up.

After gaining all this weight on the Abilify, I actually am looking at gym options and just decided on one. I think I will call right now about it while you guys have me all thinking about it.

yeh i agree with joy that exercise is good.

good for our moods and good to tackle the weight gain implicated with many meds
