My tdoc recommended the book, "The Bipolar Survival Guide." So I bought it and it is well worth the $20. It explains a lot of things in terms even I can understand. But it also has a section of different mental illnesses and their symptoms,

I realize that BP and other disorders do overlap to some degree but there is one that really sticks out for me, and that is borderline personality disorder. I keep wondering if I am paranoid about this becaus I read about it or if there is some merit to my line of thinking.

I was wondering if anybody else has questioned a dx because of something they have read?

I've questioned dx's before, like the one I had been given for years, severe depression, as it turned out it was bipolar.. sometimes education can be a very good thing, and sometimes it's not, as you said a lot of the mental illnesses over lap, there tends to be a fine line I believe between most of them, and a lot of them are treated with the same medications.

For now I would not worry about any other diagnosis, and would not be trying to self diagnosis... leave that to your doctor.

Bipolar and borderline personality disorder both exhibit the same kind of mood swings, but their cause is utterly different. With borderline personality disorder, you'd feel high when in strong relationships, which isn't the case with bipolar, Furthermore, Borderline personality disorder has an intense fear of abandonment and rejection, to the point where they will do anything to avoid it.

Thanks Carmen and wanderingcloud.

Carmen you're right; I'm going to leave it the pdoc when I see him on the 4th. I have been very cautious not to get too caught up in textbook defintions. On the other hand................

Wanderingcloud, something in your post really caught my attention, and that was the reference to relationships. The description of BPD said the same thing and that was the reason both made me take notice. Clinging to men for really sick and terrifying (now, but at the time seemed the perfect thing to do) reasons was the story of my life for a long time.

Definitely something I'm going to talk to the pdoc about. Thank you both again.

I learned a long time ago to be aware of dx. I have had most diagnosis and then it was changed or altered or mixed. I agree with educating yourself but not with everything you hear or read on line. Talk to your therapist or psych for good info. Good luck

Thanks, Mark. My big day with the pdoc is Thursday. Unfortunately, pdoc and tdoc do not agree on dx. One says BPII the other BPI, and tdoc says the difference is miniscule. I've had others with BP tell me it's a bigger difference than the tdoc would have me believe. Right now, I couldn't care less what the dx is; I just want some relief.

Thanks again.
