In attempting to get involved with bp and NAMI groups, I have discovered that they meet very rarely. I always seem to calm down some at the beginning of the month when the groups meet, but then I go all to hell for the rest of the month. I have a bad habit of not following through with things and I can't seem to find enough to keep myself occupied until then. I am so sick of getting excited about something- meditation for example-trying it for awhile, and then giving up. I want normalcy so bad that I can taste it, but it is like my therapist said, I wouldn't know normalcy if it bit me.

Hi, Thomas, I am sorry to hear that they don't meet that often, but even if you are calm I recommend that you go, you can meet others there that maybe you can contact during the times you are going like hell..

Finding things to keep yourself occupied is hard, what are your favorite things to do? are you taking medication and seeing a doctor? most of us don't know what normal is, we've suffered for so long with the illness to be able to tell what is you and what is the illness, I believe it is a combination of both, that give us our normal, there are certain things they relate to being bipolar, like mania, staying awake with little need for sleep, grand idea and beliefs, spending like crazy, etc... you can read up on all the text book symptoms but keep in mind that each one of us experience different things with our illness.

I don't really think there is such a thing as "normal" normal is what the majority of the people have decided is considered right within their society, here it isn't considered normal to eat dogs or cats, in other cultures it is the normal..if your like me your normal is who you truly believe that you are deep down inside, not what other people think should be your normal, as they are basing that "normal" on their train of thought, not yours.

You can't compare apples to oranges, their different, and you are probably a apple like me.

Thanks Carmen,

I have actually considered starting some sort of self help group of my own for the off times of the month. I want to check out as many groups as possible so that I know the operational aspect. I am also starting to figure out this site a little(not that it is that complicated, I am just computer illiterate), so I think that this will help as well.

As far as what things I like to do, I love to read and write, but my attention span is so short that I get bored or disgusted with myself before I can actually accomplish anything worthwhile. When I write during the manic times, it seems so great to me, and then when I read it during the down times, I trash it. One step forward, three back.

I am taking medication, seeing a therapist bi-weekly, and a marriage counselor weekly. Is there such thing as too much therapy? Or medication?

Anyway, thanks for responding and keeping a nice group going. I am sure it is appreciated by many.

Mark
