MDJunction to me

1magicman"Before i found MDJ i was in the deepest darkest part of my life after my abduction. I wanted to feel safe. I wanted that sense of being a normal person.Finding MDJ and the people with in it has steered me down the correct path into the light of hope. The feeling of hope that i was not alone, the feeling of hope of understanding, and the feeling of hope to move on. I never give up hope." (1magicman)

Those diagnosed with bipolar disorder, as well as the families and friends of these individuals, face many struggles and challenges. The road to stability may be riddled with complications and setbacks. Of these factors, one of the biggest hurdles is often substance abuse.

The term "self-medication," then, is defined as "the process by which some individuals may abuse substances in attempting to use them to relieve other problems such as anxiety, pain, sleeplessness or other symptoms of bipolar disorder."

In other words, these individuals have a difficult struggle with bipolar disorder and they are more likely to try a drug in the first place. The continuation of drug use possibly stems from the discovery of short-term release from symptoms of mania or depression beginning the cycle of substance abuse. The unfortunate reality is that the relief of symptoms via self-medication is short lived. An individual struggling with dual diagnosis offers this perspective: "Self-medicating treats the symptoms, not the underlying illness. The more we use a substance other than doctor supervised medication the worse our symptoms become and we often find ourselves in a hole which is very difficult to climb out of"

I am Bi-Polar and I have a twin brother who self medicates rather then do what I did and get help from a doctor.

I'm an Advocate

I self medicated for 25 years, no I was never an alcoholic or drug addict. There is a difference between self medicating and being addicted. That being said I was diagnosed with severe depression at age 16, though started smoking pot at age 12. Nothing really helped until age 40 when I was diagnosed with BPII, GAD & treatment resistant depression. I got on the right meds about 6 years ago and have been doing well.

I have no urge or intent to self medicate since I got on the right meds. Would have more to say but I have dinner to make Smile

peace & hugs
Rick
