Hello,

I have a 16yr daughter that has bipolar. She knows she has the problem but she will not take meds. She can be so nasty at times. As long as things are going her way she is fine. I really dont know what to do. I feel like she will never get better until she gets help. I am so afraid for her. She basically controls everything. I went to the state to get help and they recomm a group home. I feel she need more than that. Any suggestions? My daughter is a beautiful young lady and she is really smart. I fear she will have a unsuccessful life if I dont get her so help.

Hi! First, I am glad you are here. I understand your fears. It's hard to get help for someone who doesn't want it. Is she willing to see someone for therapy? Sometimes, when a therapist is involved he/she can be another voice advocating for help like medicines.

I heartily recommend The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide. It is a great book for understanding the illness and what family members can do. Another great one is called Loving Someone With Bipolar Disorder.

Maybe you and your daughter could research alternative therapies if she refuses meds but knows she needs help. It could be a step in the right direction.

Anyway, hang in there. Things can get better. Keep us posted on how things are going. And your daughter is welcome to post as well. Thanks for being here. Good luck! Peace and hugs, peach

When I was first diagnosed, I know I refused meds too. I was thinking, "I'm okay why do I need to take these things." I just learned to accept it and now I'm fine-ish.

It's nice that you care so much. :]

I think a group home would be helpful because they'll be other people there suffering with the same types of problems and maybe they'll convince her to take medicine.

Iunno, but I hope things get better!

Hi, Im basically going through the same situation.

It's just the stigma of taking meds and admitting they have a problem. My daughter has been through a variety of meds but getting her to take them on a regular basis is a nightmare. It's a constant fight.

My prayers are with you. We just started on a new med so we haven't gone through it yet with this one. My daughters fear is that she will NOT take anything that makes her feel weird. Right now it's her ADHD med.

Im hoping for a quick leveling out but I know it does take time.

I don't have any advice but just know that other mothers are going through the same type of thing.

i can relate to all that posted to this one...my daughter is the same way...except she breaks down and does nothing but cry and get hysterical. she has been in the hospital for a 2 week stay and i have never done anything that hard in my life. and the state has done the same thing about putting her in a home or a work force instead of helping her thru school...i know as a mother i really dont know what else to do..i have done everything i know of and im at the point of my break down..i really dont have people to talk to who understands..sorry for the soap box..i was just going to comment i can relate to everyone in some form or fashion..lena

Hello... I just found out my 13 year old has this disorder. She, too has been in the hospital, and was put on anti-depressants. I soon took her off when she became suicidal. When we went over her symptoms with her Dr, and the symptoms her father had before he committed suicide, the Dr. tried a new med, and the change in only a week has been dramatic. I am not foolish enough to think that she will never have another episode, but the meds do help!

Sure! it is a mood stabilzer - lamictal. I researched it, and it seems to have a lot of favorable reviews. She has not resisted the meds, mainly because she realizes her father had this disorder, too... and she does not want to end up like he did. He was misdiagnosed with depression/anxiety for too long.
