is there any way to overcome the moodswings with out taking medications? Im really scared, and I dont want to take meds, I just want to find a way to have better feelings and not go up and down everyday!

Welcome! Glad you are here. As for your question, if there is, I haven't found it yet. You can do a significant amount of behavior modification (Try The Bipolar Workbook) but the mood swings and such are a result of a chemical issue in the brain. Medicines go a long way to help that. I am on a really low dose of abilify and it works well. Talk to your pdoc about options. I am still researching other ways of treating this illness and if I come up with anything new I will let you know. There is a great book called Food and Mood which is helpful in understanding how to use diet to lessen mood swings. Exercise regularly too. That also helps to lessen mood swings. So there are things that help but meds are definitely important for long-term health and immediate mood swings.

Thank u so much for your help! I think ill try tha exercise and diet, but i have another question, do the medicines change u alot, or just give you better moods?

No the meds didn't change me really, except that I didn't fly off the handle so frequently or severely. Part of the better mood thing is that you have to have a positive attitude too or you can get mired in your moods. So all those things that are "good for us" (bleah) are GOOD for us...diet, exercise, enough sleep, medicine and a positive attitude...took my rebellious self a while to allow that to be true for me but now I think I get it.

Hello, I am a mom of a 16 year old. I hope it is ok for me to post in here. Can I ask how old you are?? My daughter was on Abilify and it worked wonderfully but she had phyical side affects - twitching lip and swelling of the tounge so she had to come off it. She is now on seroquel and it works well also, just not as good as the abilify. She is still a bit moody and irritable most of the time but the anger for the most part is better. We are new to this(3 months in to the diagnosis & meds ) so it is too soon to really know that for sure. Being a teenager it is hard to tell what is normal teen moods and the disorder and both combined is a nightmare. What can you tell me as a mom to help her. She hates confritation and being parented but she at 16 still needs it.

Hi! Of course it's fine for you to post here. Glad you are with us!

There's a book I highly recommend called Loving Someone With Bipolar Disorder that I think you should peek at if you have time. It gives a lot of great advice. As a mom, keep being patient and understanding; remember that a lot of her behavior is a function of the disease, not something personal even though it feels like it is; and take care of YOU as well. Look into food and mood connections (great book called Food and Mood) and discuss them with her. Teens aren't always into the idea of changing their diet but keeping track of what you eat can really help to pinpoint trigger foods. For me, white rice makes me terribly cranky. I don't know why. And it doesn't happen with brown rice. Things that cause my blood sugar to spike make me terribly mean as well. Anyway, that's one way I can make choices about my life that affect my mood. Others include getting enough sleep, getting some exercise (though I am MOST lazy. I admit it.) And charting my moods so I can track how i am doing. I don't know that a kid is going to feel like doing all of that but some of it might help.

Thanks for the post back - I will definatly take a look at these books and see if they can help both of us. She is an athlete so the exercise part is already taken care of. Now we have to build in the diet and sleep. She eats mostly fast food and as any teen gets little sleep. I do notice sugary and caffine stuff makes her crazy - fun crazy but none the less she is bouncing off the walls - then the crash - that is not always good :/ That time of month definatel plays a big role and I am wondering about the moon (full) the past 3 month the full moon has come the same time as that time of month so I am not sure if its one or the other or both. I will keep track.

Again thanks for the post and I will try to be patient especially when she is rude and disrespect full ( curshing and stuff) It is very hard.
