My therapist has asked me if I have anything to bring me down when I know I am manic. What meds do you take for it?

Quick background: 24 years dx'd on meds for 90% of that time. Suffer from Chronic pain, arthritis and fibromyalgia also and take meds for that. I am waiting to go to a new psych who isn't taking patients till April. He was recommended by my therapist. I have been psych tested recently. Going to file for disability for mental health issues in addition to pain issues.

I am taking 120 mg Cymbalta in the a.m. for depression, I also take 75mg Lyrica

For pain in the morning I take 10 mg Lortab, .6 mg Colchicine, 75 mg Arthrotec. On bad pain days I may take 1 Skelactin. I take the pain meds every 4-6 hours as rx'd so total of 40mg Lortab on a bad pain day, when I am feeling better I will take them at 6 hr intervals.

At night I take 300mg Seroquel along with the Arthrotec 75mg, 4mg Xanaflex and 12.5 mg Ambien.

I usually do not sleep well without the Ambien, though I have gone nights without them.

I started taking the Cymbalta hoping it would help with the pain but it hasn't worked out. I tried to stay at 60mg but was having depression and suicidal ideations. My GP is the one prescribing my bipolar meds right now. As I said, I am waiting to get into a psych, who is not a cookie cutter dr with a scrip pad.

My GP has given me Xanax XR 1mg for anxiety and stress, but I try not to take them, knowing their addictive nature. I can't take the regular Xanax, it gives me bad headaches and puts me to sleep.

My swings are far either way, whether it be the mania or the depression.

I am willing to go into the psych ward to detox if the psych says that is best.

I have been on these meds for the past year, but the Xanax scrip came in January. I had a manic swing from thanksgiving till Jan. 29th and crashed hard, sleeping throughout the day. I went to the dr, I was also having marital probs which exacerbated my condition, we are now in therapy.

So my question is what has your dr prescribed to you to make you "come down" rather than allowing yourself to be manic?

Oh, I need to add that I have found several meds that I am taking right now, Chantix to quit smoking, quit date Friday and Mucinex bc of chest congestion, that spur my manic state. The Lyrica is what set me off near Thanksgiving, I increased my dosage from 150mg to 225mg and was climbing the walls. The next time I went to PM I told them I was through with it, but I decided to take only 75mg to help stabilize moods.

I've been sitting here trying to find myself
I get behind myself I need to rewind myself

I take too many pills, it helps to ease the pain.

HI Ms J,

You have a lot on your plate. I take Lithium, and laictal. The lithium has worked really well to keep my mania down, and more manageable. I am bipolar 1 , and a rapid cycler. They gave me Geodon, and it calmed me down really well. It knocked me down, too much, though. I take buspar, and it calms me pretty well. It is an anxiety med. I tried taking Ativan, but it can be addictive.

My pdoc gave me Zyprexa just incase, my mania gets out of control.

God Bless,Gypsy

Thanks for that information. Like I said, I'm playing the waiting game on a new dr.

I am almost hoping that they hospitilize me, wean me off and start all over. I hate that it takes so long to get that right combo. I'm just ready to do what it takes.

I took Lithium about 10 years ago and it made me put on weight, but I have that side effect with everything. I know Lithium is the most natural drug that they can prescribe.
