MDJunction to me

jenniferdiva"MDJunction has been just an amazing support for me. The people who are on mdj are so nice! Unlike the many other support sites that I have been on. I have made several friends on mdj who are so supportive and so educated about mental illness. Of course non of us are doctors, but we certainly offer each other hugs, opinions, and advice. I have learned a great deal from my friends on mdjunction. I am also encouraging other people who suffer from mental illness to come on to MDJ. It can be a life line." (jenniferdiva)

Hi all. Posted this in General Forum and realized it should be here, couldn't figure out how to delete it.

I am having all kinds of issues with trying to find an antipsychotic that I can get up to a level that works but won't send me into shock because it lowers my blood pressure so much. My normal blood pressure is around 90s/60s, so I don't have far to go down before scariness. It has been dropping to 80/44, and have been close to going to ER. My psychiatrist has admitted to being stumped as to what to prescribe me, and I went to my physician, who was quite concerned and did an EKG to check heart/circulation- results: I'm super healthy. No answers or solutions there either, except fluids, foods high in sodium, and a few bananas a week for potassium.

Surely someone else has had this issue? I have done hours of research and have come up empty. Currently on Lamictal, Klonazapam, tried Abilify this week (no-go), previously on Risperidol, but can't get dose high enough to shut down mania before shutting down blood pressure.Blink

Hi Breath. I don't have hypotension problems, but I looked around at, probably, the same sites as you. Some mentioned the need to titrate. Maybe your doctors will let you start low and slow...?

"The atypical antipsychotic drugs with a moderate risk of hypotension are quetiapine, risperidone and zotepine. The atypical antipsychotics with a low or very low incidence are olanzapine and amisulpiride" Taken from:

Good luck, Breath.

Aw, thanks for your sleuth work StickyPaws!

The first one you mentioned is brand name Zyprexa and next on the list to try. I'll just have to get up off my butt and exercise more to counteract the weight gain on that one if I try it.

I spoke to my Pharmacist and she said I'm taking all the right steps, and managing well, but that I'm just going to have to walk a thin tightrope with the meds, and adjust according to my blood pressure readings. C'est la vie!
