MDJunction to me

"MDJunction to me is a life saver... when i first was diagnosed with Scheuermann's Disease i wrote a message to a page i found on google, hoping that they could help me.... you'd never know it but that weird feeling (you know that one where it feels like someone actually cares) came over me when i opened my email next day to find that someone on the other side of the world (at the American Medical Library)had read my message while i was sleeping, and there low and behold was the address to MDJunction.... well it is everything to me, i live it breathe it and love it!!!!! I have found many people who are struggling with similar issues banding together to help each other. It is the best place in the world, and i couldn't think of another place to go to meet so many lovely people....

thanks MDJunction

Welcome all to the dieting thread here on the Bipolar Support Group.

Several of us were discussing dieting in the Anyone Awake thread and I have heard others discussing weight issues on the forum. So we decided to open a thread to help us support each other in reaching our "Healthier Size" here in the Bipolar Support Group.

With the side effects of meds along with other problems specific to Bipolar disorder we decided to keep a thread here.

I (RED) am not bipolar but my wife is and struggles with her weight too.I would like to give everyone some background into why I am (perpetually) dieting. Here is what I put on the Diet Support Group at MDJunction when I joined it a little while ago:

Not new to dieting, been on one for about 18 months under the direction of doctors and dietician. Reason for diet needless to say is my health. I have what has been labled as Metabolic Syndorme. Basically my body does not like me . I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetic, stage 2 (improved from stage 3) renal failure, GIRD, and athsma. I take a bunch of medication for these things.

When I started this journey I weighed 265 lbs (6 foot tall), in the first year of dealing with this I dropped weight to 220 lbs. This winter I have gained back up to 240 lbs. They are wanting me to loose 20 pounds in the next 3 months and 20 more in the 3 months following that.

I know that if I watch my diet closely and exercise (walk 3 mile per day usually in hour or less) I can easily achieve this goal, I have before. I am just seem to really be having some motivational problems right now.

Hope to get in touch with others to get and give support and inspiration.

hi, Red! Thanks for starting this! Although I don't have health problems yet, I had gestional diabetes when pregnant with my son. This is a serious risk factor. I am also unhappy and uncomfortable with my current weight and need to lose 30 - 40 lbs to be at a healthy weight, according to weight charts. 10 years ago, I weighed about 60 lbs. less than I do right now. So, where do we go from here?

Thanks Red for opening this up, biggest thing to remember when "dieting" it does not have to equal deprivation, that is where most folks set themselves up for failure, small changes in your eating habits and in your exercise habits can make a difference, never try counting carbs and calories at the same time, you will give yourself a migraine, I know, I tried it..

Lowering your carb intake can aid better I believe than in trying to watch your calories, like Red, I am a diabetic, type 2, currently using oral meds for control, you can eat out, attend parties and still watch your carb intake, for those of you that don't know, we have a group here for diabetes, one for the diabetes type two, and in that group I have a recipe exchange lots of good recipes that are carb friendly..

Do yourself a favor and if you want that brownie? eat half of it, save the other half for the next day, if you don't you will end up eating the fridge to keep from eating the brownie.. been there and done that already, while we want to keep our bodies in good shape, and to aid in our health, do not come to believe this shell we wear is who we are..

Hey all, this thread is meant to be what we want to make of it. Daily check in, weekly check in, post where your at (if you are dareing, not mandatory) and your goals, how your diet is working for you, how your exercise is working for you, how meds are effecting diet, how mood is effecting diet... This thread just like this forum, it is what we make of it.

I would like to see us supporting and inspiring each other in our goals. I personally need a little more accountability.

My diet is supposed to be 2000 calories per day, limited carbs and limited protien (I eat quite a few veggies) paired with a minimum of 20 miniutes of cardio exercise per day. I seldomly eat 2000 calories per day (usually less), and weekends seem to be my diet downfall. Have had a hard time getting my exercise in lately.

My weight is 240, my goal is 220 by the middle of June (my next doctors appointment). Group please help hold me to it!

BTW, I am just thrilled with the responses given to this thread.
