Hot Dogs! They are part and parcel of the 4th.

Did you hear about Lance Armstrong going to Costco to get a hot dog? Well, the fellow behind the counter recognized him and remarked, "Aren't you Lance Armstrong who won all the races in France, and don't you alreay have 3 different kinds of cancer already? And don't you know that hot dogs may cause cancer, too?"

To which Lance replied, "Gosh, then maybe I should order 3 of them?"

Diagosed with bipolar in 1985, I'm learning to deal with it better since finding my "family" at Alcoholics Anonymous, and as of 1/3/2013, I will have one year of sobriety and more clarity than I've ever experienced in my lifetime.

we are going to be on a plane to Hawaii... hubs' high school reunion - hope to be in the air and see the fire works! I'm extremely nervous- we will be there 6 days... all those fruity drinks with little umbrellas... parties, hanging out at the beach (which I shouldn't drink because my meds cause dehydration, burn easier, and possible heat stroke!- LOL...) i should be fine I hope... there is still that annoying part of me that isn't overly impressed with 38 days, and still thinks- "well you are early in sobriety- may as well frack it up now)... All I got.

Usually, all family oriented holidays like July Fourth tends to be, there is a power struggle amongst us, my parents and my in-laws. Unfortunately, both our sets of parents still live in the same town, so when we go visit one set of parents, we are expected to go see the other set too. This makes for a super long and tiring day, because both sets want us for the same long visit, and if possible for a full meal too. We have pretty much figured out Thanksgiving and Christmas and just switch off each year which parents feed us on Thanksgiving, and the other set will feed us on Christmas. Still doesn't eliminate the expectation to spend at least four hours visiting. This has happened with July Fourth as well many times, but since there is less pressure to actually devote the day to family, I made the executive decision to stay home in our neck of the woods for the day. Surprisingly, my husband was quite OK with that. Especially it being on a Wednesday this year and we have to work Thursday morning, so it probably would not be a late night anyway. So, hopefully we will make a nice date out of it, and if we are feeling energetic enough, we will go down to the river to watch the fireworks.

How do I feel about Summer holidays though? I actually am growing to like Summer less and less. For a couple of main reasons, which I don't want to elaborate too much on, but basically, once I gained 40 pounds and refuse to put on a bathing suit, and my heat tolerance has drastically lowered and I just sweat profusely, and I prefer to stay mostly covered up to conceal my scars so I look stupid in longer pants and sleeves, and being an adult in our current situation means not having enough money to plan our own trips away. So, not to sound too negative, but I will take a power struggle for parental visits on Turkey Day over a sweaty, self-conscious, mandatory BBQ when I would rather be sitting under my cold shower.

That said, I am looking forward to the Fourth this year because I can do it my way if I want.

Great executive decision, skeptical!

bfly, 39 days is wonderful! Quit giving yourself permission to mess up.

I'm not normally much of a 4th of July girl. But for some reason, I'm really looking forward to it this year. Smile We don't live near family, so there's no pressure in that department.

My bf has the 4th off. We'll probably rent DVDs and buy barbecue ribs from the grocery store. Something really easy and laid-back.

My IDEAL 4th of July would be to be living in my own home again and to have my husband or bf (not both, lol) barbecuing ribs or hamburgers outside. Maybe we'd have a small party. My current bf has over 26 yrs of sobriety in AA and used to get sloshed while barbecuing, so he's sworn off barbecuing. Not a chance of any barbecuing outside this year!

My feelings about the 4th of July are positive. I'm very patriotic, so it's an important holiday to me.

This year we have three of my nieces and two of their friends visiting with us, so we'll probably grill out, go watch fireworks and then come home and make smores around the firepit. Pretty much my ideal 4th. Smile

In general, summer holidays are less stressful for me, since my moods tend to be naturally higher in the warm months. I love Christmas, but it can be a stressful time. Thanksgiving and my birthday both fall at the worst time of year for me (late November), so I don't enjoy them much.

My opinions are just opinions, and should be taken as such. I am not an expert on medicines or BP disorder.

i am having problems dealing with holidays, it is not the same country when the 1st 4th came about, it was at 1st to protect our country, now all the wars have turned into greed and power. so the 4th is now just a reason to get off work and drink and eat to much and go swimming, not to remember the reason why this country came about.

That was heavy Iken! You are at least one person who remembers the importance and it's a good reminder to be mindful- don't get down- ther are many more, believe it or not, that feel the same way as you!

When I was a kid we used to go to the beach for the 4th, somehow now we don't do anything so I don't look forward to it one way or the other. It's really just another day. I do feel patriotic about it, we generally watch 1776, but holiday-wise it is pretty dull.

Well as I was posting this I found out we are going to be in a parade and I am pushing for the beach. We'll see.

Wow, I hadn't realized it until I reflected on it, but pretty much all of my holidays have been real downers since getting diagnosed with bipolar, getting divorced and getting sober. (I guess that's a negative trifecta of some sort!)

Sure hope the fact that I'm looking forward to this 4th of July is a good sign! Smile
