MDJunction to me

aTinaL"To me, Mdjunction comes down to motivation. The support and information I have found here motivated me to take a very proactive stance regarding my illness. This led me to find medication and doctors that are giving me my life back.
More important than even the motivation, though, is the friendship I have found at MDJ. I have made some of the best friends of my entire life right here in this group. Even though most of us have never met, it feels as if we have known each other for years.
If Angels walk among us, and I believe that they do, most of them are here at MDJ.

THIS IS LONG. If you don't feel like reading, the point is simply: We who have bipolar frequently feel subdued emotions because of our psychotropics. Not always. But no matter what your experience with bipolar is, you should be aware of - and certainly not discredit - the experiences of others.

So I posted to Facebook (yes, this will be one of those stories) that I'm writing a script about a bipolar woman on her wedding day this April. I didn't mention it was largely autobiographical. I mentioned that medications make this woman have trouble feeling emotion.

This girl I've spoken to ONCE - I'll call her Derp - who also has bipolar - wrote this:

"You'd have to say it was a new experimental regimen. From what I understand/experience, medications don't cause you to stop feeling emotion. Emotion is kinda intrinsic to life... without it you simply can't function. How would you explain her even accomplishing anything other than feeding herself and other needs. Wants get us to work, love, live, play."

1. No, I don't have to say it's "a new experimental regimen." First off, I don't HAVE to do anything you say, derpwad. Second, atypical antipsychotics and even mood stabilizers as old and common as lithium mute emotions. Most books on bipolar dedicate several pages to warning you that this may happen to you, and that even if your emotions are muted you need to stay on your medication. What you understand/experience, Derp, seems to be pretty limited.

2. "Emotion is kinda intrinsic to life... How would you explain her even accomplishing anything." Class, what do we put at the end of a question? A QUESTION MARK. Friends, you have attested to me that people who are down, who are depressed, who have lost not only their feelings but their entire motivation CAN STILL FUNCTION. Every day I am amazed by your strength - that you get up, post here, tell me about the lives that you lead and the steps that you make, no matter how big or small. How demeaning of this girl to assume that those of us who DO suffer side effects like that turn into automatons.

3. "Wants get us to work, love, live, play." Yes. This is cliched and entirely irrelevant to your argument. You can feel muted emotions and still want to succeed or eat or, hello, write a script this April.

Ugh, I don't even know why her smarter-than-thou, smug, pretentious attitude bothers me so much. Idiot. My emotions sure aren't muted right now.

I'm sorry that this girl got to you. Try to let it roll off your back if you can get to that point. She is ignorant and sounds like she thinks she knows everything. People are going to say things that make us mad, sad, etc. We can't control what comes out of their mouths. Like you said, you've only talked to her once. I hope you start to feel better soon.

I agree with Joy. Don't let her get to you. You know the truth of how you feel and what others think is irrelevant. Especially someone who you barely know. Her opinion matters not. You write your script. You know you are quite able to do it regardless of what others may think. I think it's wonderful that you are so creative.

I would be annoyed to. It would be hard not to be. In situations like this I have a stupid saying I use,"I'm going to Turtle Wax my back so this beads up and rolls off me like rain on a windshield."

I hope you are able to do that and write your script. The idea sounds like a good one. And I know one bipolar personally who experiences VERY muted emotions and tried unsuccessfully to go off meds so it is not only a great script idea but a real life scenario.

BTW: Long time no see! Hope all is well other than this doofus.

Wow, thanks, y'all. You guys are so good to me. I've gotten 22 pages of the script done (on day 2!) and I'm looking forward to the next 88!

Well it looks like I'll get a lot more modeling done this weekend. All the exspensive magic smoke got out of the digital converter box for my TV. Once that smoke gets out electronic stuff don't work no more.

I am very annoyed over that.
