i am not sure what sort of parenting to use with him. he "flips" at the slightest things. he is my first born. he was diagnosed borderline bipolar, mood disorder, insomnia and ADHD. i have read of other things i am afraid he may have as well. it is really hard on me to deal with him. i worry that he will grow up thinking i was a mean mom because i get mad at him so much. i know he cant help it but when he gets in one of his moods i just dont know what to do. i would love to talk to parents of children that are going through this same problem.

thanks ahead for any help you may have.

do you struggle with parenting your child? i dont know if i do the right things with him. for instance, when he has homework he refuses to do it so i dont push the issue too much because i dont want him to 'flip' and become this 'evil' child. do you have any suggestions?

I'm an Advocate

Maybe rewarding positive behavior and redirecting negative behavior will work.

I'm not very good at rewarding positive behaviors, because I'm too generous as a rule. I am good at redirecting bad behavior though. For instance, if my 9 yo is throwing a small tantrum, I just find something funny or make him laugh. He quickly either forgets that he was mad or laughs at his own behavior.

My advice is purely personal. I am not a Doctor and there is NO substitute for getting proper medical diagnosis and advice.

Bipolar II, Depressed Severe

Lamictal 400 mg
Seroquel 150 mg
Effexor 150 mg
Inderal 10 mg
Ambien 5 mg
Lithium 1200 mg

Maybe the BiPolar in the family group will have a parent that will have some ideas as well. Beth

yes, i do that as well. my son gets even more mad if i make him smile. he has run away from me recently because of that. i have tried many different things and i fell trapped in what is the right thing to do. he puts himself in danger i and fear that calling the police to assist will make matters worse. i am going to talk to the doctor about him possibly having ODD and/or BPD. alot of these run in my family on my mom and dads side as well as my ex's side of the family. i appriciate any thoughts and ideas on this subject. thank you
