My name is Jenny. I recently have been diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder not otherwise specified on March 19, 2008. I had all of my life gone through cycles of being depressed and then not depressed. I thought I had something mentally wrong but was not sure what it exactly was. I had a complete mental breakdown and sought help for myself. I went through a crisis intervention and now am going through a divorce because of adultery (caused while in a state of manic) and a tough battle for child custody of our 3 beautiful little girls. I love my children for all they are worth, but I feel like my ex-husband is holding my bipolar against me in court to seek full custody of the kids. What can I do to make sure my bipolar is not held against me in court so that I can get joint physical and legal custody of the kids? Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the group.

My suggestion is obain legal counsel for yourself. This is something that requires expertise and guidance. The court will do what is in the best interest of the children. Circumstances will determine how the court rules.

Keep trying to stay well and establish a stable life for yourself. Taking meds, going to therapy, and taking care of yourself is in the best interest of you and your children.

WE care what happens to you. Keep posting and make yourself at home here...you are not alone. I will keep you in my prayers.

Comments made by me are from my own experience and they are my opinion alone, whose intent is only to share that opinion and not to give medical advice nor discourage from seeking medical help. Medicine is best left to the professionals that is what they do.

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to the group. I am glad you have found us.

I have bipolar 1 with psychotic features. I have lost custody of my kids, once, and now, have sole custody.

As long as you continue getting help, you wont have a problem. It is not up to your ex. It is up to the courts, and the judge. If you have a therapist, and pdoc, that will write letters stating that you are not at risk to your kids, that might help, too.

You could also talk to a custody lawyer, too. Some offer free first time consultation.

Feel free to share, vent or ask questions. WE are here for you.

God Bless,Gypsy
