I am taking Valpro (400gm) per day and prozac (40gm) per day. This tiredness just comes upon me and I have to lie down. I fall asleep immediately and I can sleep for hours. It is very dehabilitating. If I don’t sleep well I can become depressed and all sorts of things. I just have to sleep when my body says so. Does anyone else have this? Is it s reaction? Or is it part of the depression that I suffer with bipolar?

Hi, Valspa, I would say that you need to get ahold of your doctor about this or at least mention it to them next time you see them, I ran a interaction check on the two and there are minor drug to drug interactions, but one of the more major reactions to valproic acid is excessive tiredness. I used www.drugs.com for the check, I personally check for reactions and interactions to all med's I take, are you taking your meds in the morning or at night? maybe just change of when you take them, might make it easier on you.

I had been taking the Lamictal in the mornings but was noticing that it was making me tired, so switched to the evenings and it is better now.

Valspa~~

I have the same issue. I am on depakote (3000 mg per day), Serequol (300 mg at night), Clonidine (20 mg at night), Trazadone (200 mg at night). Not to mention the anti~inflammetories (sp) for my knees, & the diabetic meds. Out of the 17 meds I take, 10 of them say "May cause drowsiness"!!! Wonderful......

I can go to bed at 10:00 p.m. and I have to get up at 5:30 a.m. and by 10:00 a.m., I am soooooooo ready to go back to bed and often do and I will sleep till 2:00 p.m. that afternoon at the very least. My body won't let do otherwise. If I don't, I am so drained by 6:00 p.m. that I am ready to go to bed for the night.

I think part of it is meds and the other part is depression. I have a habit of "hiding" by sleeping when I am really depressed. I guess I do that so I can STOP thinking about shit. Its my "escape" of sorts. I have to talk to my pdoc about it as well........

Talk to yours and maybe he/she can help........Dana

Hard to know isnt it? I have had an awful bout of depression and I have had to take extra sleep, not only that I have restriced my movements ( staying at home) rather than out all the time as i find it too stressful and the home environment is a safe place. I used to be such a party girl, now I cant stand to be around people who drink excessively ( recovering from THE BIG A )

Life has changed for me since I went on the wagon

Val~~~

GOD I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!!!

When I stopped self-medicating (drugs and alcohol), the world became unbearable(sp) and my tolerance for stupid people became horrible!! My temper was worse too (I used marijuana to "mello" out~~part because I am usually really uptight and stressed all the time; & my temper).

I used alcohol to "socialize" because sober, I couldn't relax enough to "cut-lose" I guess you could say. However, my temper was easier to set off when I was drinking. I was ten feet tall and bullet proof when I was drinking. Anyone dare screw with me when I was drinking, I would kick there ass. On my 21st birthday, some guy grabbed my ass and I turned around and knocked him off his chair and broke his nose. Thank God he didn't sue my ass. On my 25th birthday, some girl was looking at my husband and I walked up to her and got in her face and scared the shit out of her.............not proud of any of it.

Keep up the good work!! Dana

val~~

I am not sure if you last comment was directed to me but no way am I med-free. I WISH!! I take 17 different medications each day.

These are the ones for my bi-polar,PTSD,BPD,Anxiety/Panic, OCD, & ADHD.

Depakote~~3000 mgs.

clonidine~~20 mgs.

Trazadone~~200 mgs.

Seraquol~~300 mgs.

I take other meds for my diabetes, asthma, shot knees and feet, tennis elbow, & vitamin definancy.

10 out of the 17 cause drowsiness!!

There has been a few times that I have stopped taking my meds because well.......I get so sick of being this messed up at 33 years old. I am not suppose to be this damaged at 33 y/o. I am scared to see what I will be like at 50 (if I make it there; I had cancer back in 1998 in my bones so well, it coming back crosses my mind some). Dana

When most people stop their meds they go into a deep cycle, either mania or depression. It never turns out good. One time when I stopped my meds I ended up in the hospital for 8 weeks, which is a pretty long time at the place I was at. And it sounds like you are having either serious side effects from your meds, or are depressed and need a med cycle.
