I've been on lithium for years, then add tegretol 9 years ago, and now just added lamictal. I've only just started in the past 2 weeks but have had several angry outbursts and yesterday a prolonged crying jag. Is that a reaction to the lamictal or a reason to add the lamictal?

I go back to the doc in a week, but very concerned about my moods til I get there.

Welcome Harobed. Glad you will be joining us. I hope you discover just how supportive this group is.

I have been on Lamictal for about 4 years. It's prescribed for bipolar depression, because many SSRI's cause mania. I have never had a bad response to it, but everyone reacts differently to drugs. I would talk over your concerns with your dr. Together you can determine if it is the cause of your mood fluctuations.

Thanks for replying. I thought I posted in the meds section, but am new here anyway so just as well. My prescribing doc actually just moved and I'm going to have to deal with this with a new doc who didn't want me b/e she doesn't like bp's... geez.

I've had bp for a long long time - and I've gone thru times of lots of meds shifting and long periods of meds stability. To be having to add a med is just distressing I think - worried about effects. It seems when a med doesn't work out it take a while to get back on track.

My mental health status is no one's business at work and I work hard to ensure my privacy. But that takes a lot of work - I told my doc once that I worry more about moods/reactions and keeping control of them in one day than most people worry in a month - and that takes a LOT of energy.

Harobed, doesn't sound like a good way for a relationship with your pdoc to start out....any chance of changing?

Trying to put on a show for people does take a LOT of energy...it's so exhausting....right now I dream about picking up and moving on, but I'm in a PhD program which makes changing the employer impossible. I've been mostly depressed since I started working for him and go through periods of not showing up....trying to make excuses for that is getting harder.

Anyway, hope the med change goes smoothly Laughing

I'm in one of those phases where it doesn't matter how long I've been diagnosed or how long I've been on medication, I am just really angry that I'm here at all. I'm so scared to look for a new job as the possibility that stress will make me behave badly and that my "cover" will be blown is too much.

Ironically, I work with people with mental illnesses every day - depression to schizophrenia and the fav bipolar. So difficult sometimes.

As for the new pdoc I live in an area where there are few options.... I've thought of foregoing the pdoc "checkin" for the next year as I have enough rx for that period.

I'm so tired of this..... I'm just tired.
