Thank you about the med advice. I agree. Every time my pmd tries to decrease or eliminate one I have a manic episode and have problems again. He's wanted me to start amblify for awhile now. The goal is to get me off some of the other drugs. We both feel I'm on too much but my symptoms seemed to warrent this.

To get me off these meds I'd probaply need to be in the hospital where I'd be safe. I don't want to do this. I'm a single parent. My child does not like to be with her dad. If I can't get off these meds I will have to go no matter what my situation is.

Welcome Anna, sounds like your plate is full, adjusting meds is touchy business...getting the right mix takes finesse....we are here for you, and keep posting...someone is usually awake and glad to talk.

Hi Anna,

Welcome. I am glad you are here. I was a maniac for 20+ years, too, and didn't even know it. I have finally been diagnose Bipolar 1 ayear ago. I went on the med search, too. I started with Lithium, and Lamictal, and got off the Lithium to find another one, that didn't cause weight gain. I ended up back on Lithium. If it works don't fix it..LOL I also had an alcahol, and drug problem. I got sober before I got on meds. So anyway, hang in there, it will get better.

God Bless,Gypsy

I'm glad I'm noy the only ex-maniac out there. I've been clean and sober for 6 years but then I started to eat and smoke. Stopped smoking but not the eating. I guess it's a slow process. I feel alot better than I did yesterday. I appreciate all of your support

I still smoke, too. And drink coffee, and am trying not to eat so much, because, I am on Lithium, and I don't want to gain anymore weight...LOL

Keep coming back. Feel free to hang out. There is a thread here called The bipolar lounge, is anyone awake. It's the place to hang out and talk about whatever you want. They have just too much fun over there...ROFL

I'm also new, but welcome anyway. It sounds like you are quite frustrated right now. The people on this site are wonderful to talk to, and will help to normalize what you are feeling. I do not have BP, but my husband does. I can tell you that you seem to have more insight right now than he, and he was diagnosed more than 20 years ago. I wish you luck in finding the right combination of meds. I know what it's like to see my husband suffer with BP, and I feel for you. You seem to be on the right track.

Welcome Anna and Chermw!!!!!

I am going to chime in with the rest and say that this is definitely a great group to be a part of!

Don't ever hesitate to post or send a PM. That is what a support group is all about.

I was diagnosed with PPD in 2005 (8 months after having my twin boys). My Pdoc and Cdoc have been working hard to find the right med/combination of meds. I was just recently diagnosed BP and put on my third medication. I am currently on Zoloft, Welbutrin and Lamictal (still working up to a therapeutic dose).

This August will be 3 years since I began this journey. It has been a long road and it has had its ups and downs but it has not been as bad as all of the years before I began to be diagnosed. As far back as I can remember, I have been BP (now that I know what it is and what it looks/feels like) but everyone just thought it was "that time of the month".

Hang in there. Things will get better. I do hope that you are able to reduce the number of meds you are taking. My hubby feels 3 meds, for me, is too much but they seem to be working and that is good.

Be seeing you around the group.

Welcome Chermw. I appreciate everyone's comments. Saw my pmd today and we are going to drop 3 drugs over the next few months as I get used to abilify. I'm really looking forward to this. I also was bp as long as I can remember. My daughter is likely bipolar also. My ex has primary custody and didn't believe me until 6 months ago. I hope she gets on meds early so she won't suffer a long chronic illness

Don't let fear get you. Get to a good doctor soon.

I promise there is help out there for you. You don't have to feel this way any more. Also, I have found a great book that has helped me. "Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder" by Julie A. Fast and John Preston, PsyD It speaks on a level anyone can understand and answers questions and helps you to help yourself so you feel some self control, which is something I have a problem with when I get "out of sorts" as I refer to it now. Just remember you are not alone. Anne

Hey Anne, I liked that book also, by Julie Fast...I had forgotten what a help it was. I have found keeping a daily mood chart that lists meds, dosages, moods, etc. a good way to see how things are going. It only takes a few minutes at the end of the day...and then there is a record of the week, month, etc..for yourself and also for doctor's visits.
