Hello, I thought I would introduce myself. I am 41 years old, married with one child.

So far my experience with bipolar disorder has involved one major episode. I was hospitalized in 2/06 for a manic episode that included some pretty strange delusions. The depression that followed was brutal. I am sure many of you can relate.

For now my symptoms seem to be in remission but the psychologic impact of being hospitalized and being dx is still a struggle for me.

I must say that finding out that you suffer from MI probably is shocking at any age. But to discover it at age 39 was an eye opening experience.

I look forward to getting to know you.

Hi forever,

Welcome. I have bipolar 1 also. When, I was diagnosed 5 yrs ago, I was pretty stubborn about getting help. After five yrs of hell, I finally had a bad enough manic episode, and started rapid cycling. It was the worst, I ever experienced. It has taken me awhile to get used to the idea, too. I had alot of mixed emotions.

Are you on meds, are you going to therapy? Once, I got on meds, and seeing a therapist it really helped with the whole experience.

Godbless, Gypsy

Hi Forever, and welcome to the group, getting the diagnosis of bipolar at any age, can be frightening to say the least, I got mine after ending up in the hospital from a suicide attempt at the tender age of 48..accepting any illness is hard, I try to look at mine as a blessing rather than a curse, it brought me understanding on why I had suffered the pain that I had that finally brought me to my knees.. we're glad you are here, and you will find lots of caring people here..

Thank you all for the warm welcome. Most people that I have read about can look back on their lives and see other times when they suffered symptoms. This really isn't the case with me. My p-doc says that I have the classic form of manic depression with total remission between episodes. I believe I had an episode after my Dad's death at age 13 but have not had any further symptoms until my episode two years ago. Once again death triggered my episode. This time it was the death of a child. There was twenty-six years between my first episode and my last episode even though I remained untreated because I was not diagnosed the first time it happened.

I do take medication presently I take Lamictal 200 mg and Lexapro 10 mg. Though sometimes I do wonder if it is the medication or just a natural remission of symptoms. Still I don't have any problem taking medication. I haven't had any serious side effects from the medication and for that I am grateful.

I did start counseling after my hospitalization. I didn't find it all that helpful as my trigger seems to be the death of a loved one and there isn't much you can do to prepare for an unexpected death. So I take my medication, watch my sleep hygiene, see my p-doc once a month and have picked myself up and moved on the best I can.

Once again thank you for the warm welcome,

Forever
