I understand the filing dilemma. I haven't filed yet, and I really need to. But I'm so overwhelmed with the mountain of paperwork! Of course, I realize that is what social security wants me to feel. They want to overwhelm us so we won't try.

My experience with disability has been a really good one. When I got sick 14 years ago I was hospitalized and I really was in no condition to work. I stayed on SSI until three years ago where I felt I could go back to work if I wanted and didn't "feel"diabled so I asked them not to send me money anymore.

Thankfully for some reason my file was never closed. They probably thought I was manic at the time. After this last mania and hospitalization I called Social secutiy and made an appt with the office. They helped me with my paperwork. I believe they helped 14 years ago too. Because of the lack of concentration and the pile of papers I believe some case workers will help you with it.

I hope you get the help you need and don't give up. The other thing is even if you are denied and go to court, the payments are started at the time of application.

Good Luck and blessings,

Maureen

Becca dear, I understand that the amount of paperwork can be daunting to say the least, my husband fussed and fussed about having to do it in triplicate, I had to remind him he was dealing with the government here, they have to have 50,000 copies of the same thing filled out time and time again.. with his VA, he wasn't sending in the paperwork they required, every time I would find a new one that he hadn't sent in and would hear him fuss, I would let him have it..lol, reminded him they could not do what he was wanting and would not do it unless he did what they wanted, to just hush and do it..lol, like NJB said, some of them will help you, with a mental illness there is a lot more going on than just the back problems my husband is filing on..

You're so right. I know deep down that I can't work, but it is kind of hard to accept. I'll get the filing done asap!

I filed last March. I'm at the appeal stage and am waiting for my court date. They said it takes 120 days to get the court date. Do you usually win at that stage? My Pdoc is behind me 100%.

Thanks

Dawn

I am just praying that everything goes through, but if I have to appeal I will for sure. The paperwork was a difficult chore to get through it took days to fill out the stuff they sent me because I just kept getting so overwhelmed and could only do a few questions at a time.I really appreciate, all the input from everyone, sounds like a few of us are dealing with the joys of dealing with this delightful process. I am still stunned the doc said he thinks with 7 months of intensive therapy and possible inpatient work I could be fine. The man was late to the appt, he checked stuff off on the worksheet he asked questions from without asking me for the answers, when I tried to tell him about my suicidal thoughts when I used to drive and about cutting in the past he cut me off and said he knew I wanted to talk and he was someone new to listen to me but that our time was up. How can that be thorough? He rushed through to get to next guy in waiting room. I just have to hope that combined with everything else and he doesn't make the decision that it works out. Oh, and he asked very intrusive questions about my sex life and asked me about having affairs. Is that normal? that put me into a 2 day freak out. I also suffer from ptsd due to a traumatic assault 4 years ago so talking to a male in first place was hard enough and then to have to talk about personal sexual issues messed me up. I rambled again, anyway, don't let this stop you if you are trying to work up going in and applying. I wish i would have started this years ago but I thought I could deal and refused to see myself as disabled, just one more thing in my life that seemed too big and overwhelming to deal with so I shut myself off and procrastinated, don't do that.

Anyway, ya'll are awesome

The psych nurse in my pdoc's office gave me this piece of advice: The social security doctor is NOT your friend! She told me I can't look at a social security doc the same as MY doc because most SS docs are looking for a way to discredit us. I plan to remember this whenever I get to the point of dealing with a SS doc.

Now I'm stressed about it, how long before I find out? Great, something else to obsess over. I keep thinking I should call my case worker and let her know about what happened first. Oh I don't know, I keep just telling myself to trust God, but honestly, if I want one thing to happen I can basically count on the opposite happening. Now how negative is that.

I had pretty good luck with SSI/SSDI. I applied two years ago and was denied. Then I did the appeal and was denied, but I let the time frame go too long to do the next appeal, and I was working so I thought, well, I don't need it. After I lost that job, I reapplied. That time I got accepted right away. And I got a check with all the back payments from the first time I applied. Just keep trying, eventually you will get it.

I think Kate is right. We probably WILL get it if we are persistent enough. It will just take time, and patience is not one of my virtues.
