Hello everyone! I have a question. I can't take any of the SSRI's due to the fact that they cause mania with me. The tricyclics just make me gain weight. My pdoc put me on Xanax Xr last week for the severe panic I have. Does anyone know much about the XR's? Thanks!

I'm on Seroquel XR. I need the XR to level me out through the day. I also did a "no-no." I NEED some Xanax. Pdoc took me off all benzodiazopines, so I got my GP to prescribe me some. This is the first time I've been on NO antidepressants in 12 years, and the Seroquel alone just wasn't getting it. I'm calmer knowing I have the Xanax if I need it. I have to be careful though. I was so freaked out about having to return to my old workplace a couple of days ago that I took too much medication. (Not enough to hurt me, just enough to make me sleep.) And I forgot to pick up my kiddoes from school!!! Bad Mommy! Thankfully hubby picked them up so they weren't traumatized. From now on I will only take 1 Xanax, not 2.

Are you taking the regular Xanax or the XR's?

It is the generic form of Xanax Xr. It normally takes a LOT of medicine to affect me, but I actually think I'm going to start breaking the Xanax in half. It makes me feel SO much better, but I don't want to be knocked out.

Becca, what was the reason your doctor took you off the benzo's in the first place? having your two doctors work against each other is not a good thing.. you need to tell your doctor that handles your bipolar meds, what you have done..

Becca, Tell you psych doc how the xanax helps you. Benzos can be habit forming, if taken long enough, a person can develop mental and physical dependance on them. Did your psych doc wean you down and then off of them or send you on your way to go cold turkey? Definately talk to you psych doc. If you really need the xanax to control your anxiety or other BP symptoms then insist the your doc gives them to you. If you intend to continue getting them through your primary care doc then inform your psych doc that you are taking them and will continue to take them. Your psych doc needs to know all medications you are taking at all times. There is always a possibility of one drug countering the effects of another rendering no therapeutic response to a drug. There is always the risk of a drug interaction with another drug that could cause a serious health condition. I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it can be to get different medications from different doctors where the two doctors are not aware of you taking other medications.

I'm sorry I don't mean to lecture you - I would just hate to see something bad happen to you unnecessarily. Like I always told my kids, "Be smart and play safe"!

Hi,

I was taking Ativan, and stopped taking it because it over sedated me. I am now on Buspar. it's not addicting, but, helps my anxiety.I am on Lithium XR, and it is an extended release med.

Thanks, Gypsy

God Bless,Gypsy

My situation is that Seroquel has FINALLY helped my depression...which allowed anxiety to move to the forefront! It is always one or the other, depression or anxiety. Pdoc isn't that worried about anxiety, she's just glad I'm not suicidal. (I haven't been seriously suicidal in a long, long time.) Anyway, I find the anxiety to be even more paralyzing than the depression. Thus, the need for XANAX. My GP is well aware of the seroquel, and I don't think he feels that Seroquel and Xanax will hurt. Plus I will take the Xanax only on an as-needed basis.

I can't take Seroquel due to weight gain, but I do agree with you on taking the Xanax only as needed. If I am correct, did you at one time say you were getting headache shots that contained Thorazine. I'm prescribed 25mg a day, for sleep and to help out when I get manic. Do you know much about this drug?

I asked my pdoc for thorazine. She said no. All she wants me on is Seroquel and some stupid blood pressure medicine that is going to make me faint the first time I take it. (I HAVE LOW BLOOD PRESSURE MOST OF THE TIME!!!) I'm really kind of thinking of changing pdocs, but I worry about that since I'm applying for SSDI.
