Why wear a ribbon?

MDJunction to me

ThereseML"When I first came to MDJ, I was in need of peer support in dealing with issues of my childhood abuse. I was moving away from the painful issues and trying to find an uplifting group of people to help me transition to a thriver in my life. I found that here. I also found a group of peers with Fibromyalgia and found the same uplifting experience there. My computer crashed and it was a while before I found my way back, this time with issues related to Parkinson's Disease. I had tried a few other support sites before reminding myself of MDJ. On those, I never got a reply. I finally found my way back here and again found very supportive, caring and inspiring people who made me feel like I was 'back home'. Indeed I am." (ThereseML)

My name is Jenny, and I'm new to the idea of a support group. I've been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder after years of being diagnosed and treated off and on for major depression. I got to the point where I was barely functioning, and now I'm being treated. My family and friends are reluctant to speak of my "problem", and they're also not particularly familiar with bipolar disorder. I've tried to change that, but- reluctant is a bit mild to describe my family's discomfort.

I've had it beyond rough for years, and I've always felt terribly alone about it. I think I'm here to experiment with the idea of a support group. I want to be better and I want to feel better, and that's about as optimistic as I get.

Hey Jennyt!!! I am glad you found this group...there is understanding and support here. As for your family, if they see that the diagnosis of bipolar disorder is not anything different than diagnosis of other medical problems they may start to understand and accept. It takes time. Do any of them have a diagnosis of high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, etc.? No different with bipolar disorder, is a physical problem that can be treated with medications.

Just takes a some getting used to. Doesn't change who you are.

Comments made by me are from my own experience and they are my opinion alone, whose intent is only to share that opinion and not to give medical advice nor discourage from seeking medical help. Medicine is best left to the professionals that is what they do.

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
The leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
