I recently told by my doctor that I am bipolar. It took about 5 years for me to finally get the help I needed. I was originally told that I had OCD and given and antidepressent and that made my symptoms worst. I then joined that Army and had a severe manic episode that caused my military career to end. I then saw 3 psychs and after a one night stay in the psych unit at our local hospital I was diagnosed with bipolar I rapid-cycler. I am now taking Seroquel XR at 300mg. Since they have gotten my cycles under control I feel normal.

I'm glad that you finally got the help that you needed after 5 years. Smile

I was also given an anti-depressant when I first went to my pdoc, because he thought I just had depression, later we found out that I was depressed I had bipolar. It sent me into hypomania, which isn't so bad that I had to take a stay in the hopsital.

I'm glad that you finally had some sucess with some medications. Smile

I'm still in the process with my medication still.

But, welcome the the site, it's always nice to have you here, hope to see you around here mor often

Welcome Jacob.

You've certainly come to the right place for support. I am also an Army veteran. That was many years ago though. I have bipolar II, so only had hypomania. This enabled me to finish my tour.

I know that 5 years seems like a long time to wait to get an accurate diagnosis, but the average bipolar person takes between 8-10 years for a correct diagnosis. It actually took me about 23 years to receive the diagnosis.

That being said, we are happy to have you here. Please feel free to join in anywhere and to PM me or any Group Leader with questions.

Take care.

Lisa

My advice is purely personal. I am not a Doctor and there is NO substitute for getting proper medical diagnosis and advice.

Bipolar II, Depressed Severe

Lamictal 400 mg
Seroquel 150 mg
Effexor 150 mg
Inderal 10 mg
Ambien 5 mg
Lithium 1200 mg

Jacob13 hi and welcome glad you've found us. I'm sorry a severe manic episode ended your Army career. Now the doctors know what you have and you can be treated properly. Isen't it such a relief when the meds really work well and make you feel stable, hope this continues.

Hey Lisa,

How do u like Prestiq I am on 50 and I actually love it, I have had no side effects and it really lifted me out of a deep depression. I am scared out of my mind to take Serequel, I am afraid I will gain weight. Did this happen to you?? I am also on Ambien 10 mg as well. Just would like to hear from you, I am going for disability I just couldn't work anymore I was about to break down. They just opened my case. Thank god I have a loving husband you is good to me and my son (My son is severely ADHD, but doing better) I spent 5 years raising him at my mom's house and it was hell on earth.......my mom mentally abused me and I had to work at night bcause of the business I was in, she complained about watching him. It was such a bad place for him he really didn't do well, and my mom always put me down and yelled in front of him over stupid things. I got married last OCT and it has been the best thing for me and him.

What is your story I would love to communicate with you, it's hard when you don't have the support of people who have this.
