Hello to all my fellow dual diagnosed bipolar addicted people. Are you out there? I could really use someone to talk to right about now. i have been diagnosed for years now and I am still trying to understand why I act like I do. Is there anyone out there that feels like I do ? If so, please contact me.

Hello.

I am not diagnosed, but my wife is, so I know how it's like.

Sometimes I ask her WHY she acts like that. She says, of course, that it's the disease. But once she realizes she shouldn't do it, and it's the disease (she realizes even before, not thinking back at what happened), I don't understand what prevents her from NOT acting that way, when she knows it's wrong all along. She doesn't have a valid explanation. Maybe you would...

being a person with with a mental illness is a nightmare. yes at times we may know right from wrong but we do not have the ability to act in the appropriate manner. First and foremost you need to remember it is a disease of the brain. While we may be interlligent people, there are times when we simply have no control of ourselves. I have yet to meet anyone who can control their brain. That is the frustrating part that we have to bare, we know what we should do but we just can't, no matter how great the desire is we simply cannot. I cant give medical reasons only facts that I have li ved with for 20 + years. Knowing right from wrong and being able to live in the right from wrong is what our disease is all about. We are all good people whose brains just malfunction. Do not hold your wife responsible, she cannot help it, in time and with proper medication she can manage it.

You need to understand she wants nothing more than to be able to do right, but her brain won't allow her too. I know myself I just hate it! I mean I really really hate. Thats why we have a high rate of suicide, this disease is horrible. But we can learn to live with it, and make the best of it. I hope this helps in some small way. I know it is difficult for you, but please remember, she is suffering, she feels bad for her actions and does not want to dissappoint you, but the devil inside her brain has taken away her abilty toact the way you feel she should. Have some sympathy she is in a great struggle

This helps, Kathy, as it's the best explanation about this I've ever gotten. I guess it's hard for us, the ones not having to go through this struggle for most of our actions, to understand how it's like when your brain doesn't listen to you.

I've seen some of Jim's posts, and, I hope I'm not wrong, he found a way to "go around" the crisis, let it go, wait until it passes and it's all gone.

I guess my wife is tired of explaining, or just doesn't have the words, but she never put it like this, like you described what's going on. I guess she is, indeed, suffering more than I am. And I'm truly sorry for that. I'll stand by her all the way, and she knows that, I hope that helps her.

Thank you, Kathy.
