My friend is in the middle of a major episode here in MA and she has no family who really cares, just her recently ex boyfriend and myself. She really should be commited right now but I don't know how to go about making this happen. She was fired from her job about 2 or 3 months ago and has gone downhill from there. She is extremely paranoid and is talking about things like communists and pedophiles. This is not like her. Last time she was hospitalized it was anarchy...the police found her walking the streets and commited her. What can I do when she refuses to go to the hospital? Her Doctor isn't helping right now.

Oh my goodness...

The most you can do is call the police as she is an adult and they have to see her behavior and then make the decision to commit her.

What medicine is she on?

I agree with bipolarmom. Sadly, there are not too many avenues. But you are in MA? Where? I know in Western MA we have crisis teams you can call who can help. You can also call the IMH to get suggestions of what you can do to help your friend. Be as patient as you can with her but if you can, talk with her about her illness--is she taking her meds? Is she doing things that work to make a person feel better? (Like exercise)

Anyway, good luck with it. I will be thinking positive thoughts for you and her.

Dear ConcernedFriend,

We all want to help friends and loved ones in a time of need, but we also often wonder what "real help" is.

Perhaps the following link will get you started with what you need to help your friend.

HELP

Helping another person, especially a friend or loved one, when we CAN truly help, is perhaps the noblest and purest act of love we can undertake.

Take care, and thanks for your post!

Kindest regards,

Jim
