I'm still very new to my diagnosis and am learning as much as I can so i have a question? When you guys cycle between hypomania/mania and depression, is it usually always a set schedule like for example one week manic one week depressed, or can your cycles be unpredictable. Basically can you cycle quickly sometimes, and slowly (weeks and months) at other times? Or is it always the same schedule for the most part?

thanks

I've lived with bipolar for a number of yrs (only knew i was bipolar last 2 yrs) and never really recognized my "cycles". Since i've joined this site, i've learned how to recognize these symptoms.

Most of my manias and depressions don't last very long, anywhere between 1 to 3 days or so. Recently i was hypomanic for 10 days (thank God i still slept) which was unusual for this high to last that long. I'm hoping i don't crash but the past 3 days i've been better. I take Klonopin if i'm having trouble handling it.

No, i don't have a set schedule for when this happens, but i do have lows & then highs just before my menstration and i think some of that is the hormonal thing.

Welcome to the group Smile

I wish I knew from one week to the next! Wink ceratinly on meds, the cycle becomes less intense. I am BP II ie have hypomania. Recently was not doing so well, I was cycling from hour to hour. Literally. Adjusted meds, now it's slowed down a bit. Can be days, a week and as Dit says, there are certain triggers, stress is a major factor. I imagine that looking back on your behaviour you can see a pattern, even undiagnosed. all the best on your journey.

I wish there were a schedule for my mood swings, but they happen whenever. I have had months of depression followed by manic bursts out of the blue. There is no rhyme or reason. The goal of medication is to level things out so there are no mood swings. If you are having rapid mood swings, you need to talk to your pdoc about adjusting your meds to bring it under control.

Hey there Smile

There is so schedule for my mood swings. Acutally, I don't believe I have ever heard of a "schedule" before for BP. Thats why it sucks, If i knew when to expect it, when it was coming.. it probably wouldn't be as big of a problem. I have long cycles of depression, hypomania.. but inbetween those i have very rapid cycles of mixed episodes and other icky stuff. Medicated, I do not cycle as much, and I usually have enough perspective to recognise when its happening. Its good to map out when you're cycling, to keep a record. I use my diary on this site for this, among other reasons. Welcome!
