what is going on with her BP father. He has these outbursts, and I don't want her to think his behavior is acceptable. I'm fairly new to all of this and don't really know how to explain to her what is going on. He was diagnoised with BP after a tragic accident with a severe brain injury causing the BP disorder. The last 2 years have been so up and down. I'm so worried about how my kids are handling all of this? Any suggestions?

Welcome Trachaelg. You have taught me something new today. I have never heard of bipolar being brought on by a brain injury. I am sorry that had to happen to your family. It must be much differnent for you than it is for most bipolar families were the symptoms or diagnoses has been a lifelong struggle.

I would try to be as honest with your 6 yr old as possible. I have bipolar and am more prone to crying jags than anything else. There are times that I get aggravated and irritable and scream as well. My 5 yr old always comes and checks on me when I am in a funk mood, whether crying or screaming. These youngsters are more understanding than we know. I explain to my daughter when I am crying and upset, why i am upset and that it is not her fault or anybody else's. I tell her that mommy's heart hurts. This is what I do and you may need to adjust my advice for your family because our situations are different. BE WELL AND MANY BLESSINGS!

BE BLESSED!

Actually the more I'm learning I realize that he had BP before his accident. They are telling me that the brain injury only intensified it to the extreme. Before his accident he was always on Zoloft which seemed to keep him from bottoming out. But it wasn't until after his accident that he would go into periods of extreme frustration, rage, and anger spells. At first we thought it was because he was coming off of all of the morphine he was given in the hospital. It took about a year after his accident to get diagnosed and on meds. He has been on disablility from the accident for almost 2 years now, and his physical body had recovered as much it's going to, but now I'm worried that because of the brain injury and BP that he will not be able to hold a job down.
