My husband brings home anything and everything he can get his hands on. Since I have owned and lived in a house with him it has been filled with junk. He brings home things like the vegetable bins to refrigerator and ice cube trays from work, broken printers, we have a whole collection of them. Just weird things that #1 are not necessary and #2 we don't have the space for. Does anybody understand this behavior? Is there anyway I can discourage it without threatening him?

My husband does the exact same thing! The Dr. told me

that it is very common for people with bipolar to have obsessive compulsive disorder and various addictions.

My husband has spent THOUSANDS of dollars on "collectibles" comics, cards, frankin mint, hallmark, and lots of "free junk" like broken electronics and computer stuff. Like you, we don't have the room for this and it is stuffed all over the house, causing fights. (No room for anybody elses stuff)

It has also caused financial hardships because of the thousands of dollars he has spent and when he is manic his paycheck is HIS MONEY to do as he pleases!!! My

paycheck is ours to pay the bills. He DOES contribute but nowhere near what he should be. ALso there is alcohol abuse, which he denies because it is ONLY BEER and I am such a NAG! I'm tellin ya that is why I've been seriously contemplating divorce.

I have been fighting the urges to collect some of the usual random oddities (old computers, hair dryers, mostly electronics) and to actually start throwing some of it out. I'm sure I'm saying this more as a defense right now, but I do actually sculpt with this "crap".... but generally, I see it and I say "hey! I need that!". I am trying to get rid of a lot of this because it is, as mentioned, everywhere.

Good luck with getting some sort of middle ground set.

I do that.

I do love free things. But I know we have no room for them. So...When I am in a stable mood, every now and then, my husband can convince me to pare down what I have and either have a yard sale or sell it on ebay. I get to buy one thing I want with the proceeds.

You could try that. But wait for a stable mood, or it won't work.
