ok the bf thinks i'm just depressed all the time. I haven't been rapid cycling but last week i was good and now this week i'm down. he doesn't see that as cycling.

could there be something to this? I can't go to the doc until my cobra insurance get processed.

i think it's the sleep med, it has taken me nearly two days to get over taking a half of one with no energy drinks or weight loss pill to take to lift the fog.

please help me try to explain this to my bf or give me some insight into what might be going on.

thanks in advance

When you can take him for a visit to the doctor...in the meantime, just be patient with him...explain that until the doctor changes the diagnosis you would rather the treatment of the original diagnosis.

And let him read up on this disease...information is the key. Understanding bipolar disease and accepting treatment is essential to a functioning life. And i am sure that is what he wants for you.

he says he has read up on this and it seems to him that the depression is just a part of bipolar and that maybe i'm more depressed than i am bipolar. i'm really upset cause i told him that i might just be cycling and that i don't rapid cycle all the time but it's still cycling and he called it a copout.

His comprehension of the reading material seems off...bipolar is both parts...although, some people cycle one way more than the other...I tend toward the manic...and have seldom been depressed. Some people tend toward the depressed...it is still bipolar disease.

Maybe he is kind of denial a little and is trying to rationalize the illness...that happens...he may be working through his understanding.

P8nt, depression and mania go hand in hand, my BP2 expresses, primarily in depression, it doesn't make me any less bipolar, what dx did your doctor give you? Bipolar 1 or type 2? and yes, your abilify can be used for many other things, than just bipolar, hell all the medications that bipolars are on, besides maybe lithium is for other things, a good portion of them are used to treat seizures. My adopted brother is on both Lamictal and abilify, he requires it for his mania, he is BP1 and tends to get out there.

Your boyfriend might be comprehending the information he reads, but he probably has the old picture of bipolar/mental illness stuck in his head, from what he sees on tv, if you are not running around with a butcher knife in your hand trying to kill people or getting in the tub slicing your wrists then you can not possibly have a mental illness.. take him with you to your next doctors appointment, and have the doctor explain to him that mental illness/bipolar has many faces.

Get him books that better explain what you are going through as alot of the information online do not discuss bipolar throughly..

Hi P8nt,

I lean more toward depression and my manic phases are so mild that I went for several years without realizing that I felt differently during those days. I read an interesting article this morning that says women do tend more toward depression than men.

I take Abilify, too. It does treat a lot of different illnesses. I don't think that deminishes it's affectiveness in treating BP.

I tend to agree with the others. I would also ask him where he is getting his informaiton. There are a lot of misleading articles on the internet. It is very easy to get some really bad misinforamtion.

It took my husband a long time to accept that I have a mental illness. I'm sure your boyfriend will be ok once he gets some good information from you Dr.

Take care,

DC

thank you all for your help.

i know he is upset because i've been so down and can't bring myself to do very much of anything. I'm restless and if i start to do something, i just can't make myself do it so i start to cry, i know he cares about me and is just trying to explore all options. the thing is the doc never told me i have anything just starting giving me the Abilify when i suggested i might have bipolar. I have been so restless and it gets worse when i take the sleep meds he gives me. i honestly think the sleep meds make me worse. so come tomorrow I will be calling his office. although i don't have insurance as of yet. i'm not sure what i will do.

Hi, P8nt, first your doctor should not have just "started" you on the abilify without knowing what he was treating in the first place, do call him in the morning, and discuss your sleep med and why he is treating the way that he is, your boyfriend needs to be taught about what is going on with you, some people only believe if they hear it from a person with a MD, PHD, etc.. at the end of their names, I know for me, that until I was able to come home and say, this is what the doctor said, they didn't believe me that there was something actually wrong.
