kristen if someone was on meds and stopped takin them absolutly they can have massive mood changes however it is not an excuse to abuse anyone that person needs to be accountable for their actions however its a catch 22 because off of meds can be a scary thing i hope you are not bein abused though or on the other fott your not bein a meanie be blessed :~dragonfly

dragonfly is right-it might be a normal thing to happen but it's just not EVER, EVER, EVER ok. no matter the circumstances, abuse isn't ok whether you're bipolar or not and it either needs to stop or whomever is being abused must protect herself...

right on!!!! bipolar does not = violence, nor do people who suffer from bipolar deserve to be treated violently.

It's not normal, or ok, for ANYONE to be abusive, whether bipolar, bipolar and unmedicated, or not bipolar.

Welcome Kristenv,Glad you joined, Was the person abusive while on meds? In my opinion, Abuse is a personality defect, not a bipolar trait.Irregardless of the cause, Abuse in any form is unexceptable and should not be tolerated.

Welcome K. The Bipolar monster is capable of abuse and violence......but neither is acceptable, as Dreux said. The inhibitions that I have are lowered during an episode, so I will say more than in a calm state. This is the reason that my family will just let me alone when they see me possibly slipping. Solitude is my key to regaining control of myself..

I am with the others on this one...being abusive is not necessarily a bipolar trait...and can happen on or off meds...if the person is an abusive person. It can be the product of other factors like an abusive childhood...that makes us see abuse as a normal behavior. It is not acceptable no matter what the situation.

Drugs and alcohol to self medicat can also cause abusive behaviors...stay safe...
