Since my fiancee is Bipolar I would like to know as much as I can about this disease. Do you ever feel normal? Which medications have helped the most?

This disease seems to be different in every individual. I would like to know all the symptoms (although I fear there may be hundreds).

Thanks in advance

Hi, sugarluv...i feel normal for me. I have bipolar disease and have mild syptoms...unless I drink alcohol they are managable. My son is bipolar and his symptoms are more severe without Prozac and Zyprexa. He holds down a full time job and does all the normal things that a 25 yr old person does. I also have a job, family, and activities that are normal.

My son's symptoms when having an episode are paranoia, psychosis, racing thoughts, and loss of interest in normal activities.

My symptoms when having an episode are anger, psychosis, trouble sleeping...

Hope this helps you. There are lots of other people on the site that may be able to give you more information.

hi I have bipolar and my symptoms range from paranoia, racing thoughts, thoughts of hurting myself, thoughts of worthlessness, not sleeping for days to sleeping way too much also i have panic attacks. I have been on prozac, zoloft, paxil, wellbutrine and lexapro in the past. I am now on abilify, lexapro, ativan and a variety of meds to help me sleep.

For me feeling "normal" would be this..being able to function like a normal human being and being able to work without the thought of making a mistake. when i do make mistakes no matter how small they may be, it usually takes me days to get over it. so no matter how much medicine i take that's an issue I have to work out in therapy.

meds and therapy go together, to me you can't have one without the other. if you would like to ask anymore questions of me feel free to I will answer them to the best of my ability....lol

what you have to realize is this disorder comes in stages....some day are good and some are bad it's all in how you and your partner manage each day and communicate, communicate, communicate.

hope this helps some. i know many of us have the same symptoms and then some of us don't. glad to have you here.

The voice inside my head doesn't like you either!

My journey to the grave will not be with an attractive well preserved body, I will skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand and wine in the other totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO WHAT A RIDE"

Hi sugar - I'm glad you decided to join us! Like Norma, I feel normal for me, but I'm used to me by now!!! I have listed a couple of website links that I think are helpful. They are geared toward people who have a bipolar friend, loved one or family member. There's a lot of information out there!!!!! Feel free to keep posting!!!! There are many people here who can relate to your situation. (Also - did you know that there is a group on this site for friends, family and loved ones of bipolars???) It's the Bipolar Family Support Group. There are many many people in that group who share their experiences of living with, supporting and loving a bipolar person. They would also be happy to offer you support. Good luck to you and your boyfriend both!

Thank you very much for your information. I will look at those links you gave and also the Bipolar family support group.

I mean I can't help him if I don't understand WHY he feels, acts the way he does. Not that it is bad behavior but I need to get to know him more and then maybe I can tell if an episode is coming on. That would take some intuition on my part so that is why I want to know as much as possible.

I am also curious what physical symptoms and problems bipolars have so if any. I will probably post a question like that on one of the forums. Thank you all for caring enough to answer my post, I feel like I have such a long way to go...

Dear Sugarluv...bipolar disease is a chemical imbalance of the brain. It has many symptoms. Deep depression or extreme mania are the two factors in this illness. Everyone has ups and downs that is normal. In bipolar disease the highs and lows are out of the normal range.

Trying to understand this disease because you love him is commendable. We are here for you...and he is welcome to join the site. Like Kimmie said there is a group that is for Bipolar in the Family also...

Hi, Sugarluv, the symptoms of bipolar are as varied as the fingerprints on humanity, each person exhibits their own.. you can find the textbook list anywhere on a bipolar website, but only a doctor can diagnosis, and figure out what meds are best for him.. you can type bipolar medications into any web browser and come up with a host of medications, one way you can learn his symptoms and to tell if a rough patch is coming on is to chart his behavior, you can figure out what his triggers are, how he behaves right before a depression or a manic episode, etc, you can also make notes of his behavior during that time..

Has he been to see a doctor and gotten a diagnosis of bipolar?
