Hello all,

Okay, so I'm new to this but I wanted to try it out. I am 23 years old and was born with Cerebral Palsy., and I am in a whelchair. Anyway, all my life I have been okay mostly except for being moody sometimes. Then I get into a relationship and I am okay and really happy for awhile and then I'll find any reason to push that person away thinking that they deserve better. Then I'll be fine and happy again for a while and then this will happen again. I have realized that this isn't fair to my relationships or to myself. I just rencently started a relationship with this girl I really love and we were talking about my moods and decided that maybe I should try out some medicine so about a week ago I started Lexapro, but I don't really like medicine, so I was wondering if anyone had a suggestions on books I can read and or other treatmets besides medicine to help cotrol my mood swings? Any help would be great.

Thanks.

What does your doctor think? Have you been diagnosed with a mood disorder?

A week isn't very long.... why not give the Lexapro a chance for awhile and see how you feel on it after your system has had a chance to adjust to it?

There's nothing I know of to control mood swings that has been tested and proven to be effective other than various kinds of medicine. Things like exercise and meditation might possibly be of some help, and talk therapy might also do you some good.

Welcome to the group...wheels, glad you joined. Were you diagnosed with bipolar disease? I have bipolar and so does my son 26.

Some of the things you describe as your behaviors may be relationship issues and some may be mood swings. I find it helpful to keep a mood chart with moods, activities, sleep patterns, meds and dosages, etc.

If you do this for a period of time it helps to record things so you can see if the meds are helping. Some people like to keep a journal.

You can bring the chart to the doctor to review. How often are you supposed to visit your doctor?

Hi, Wheels and welcome to the group, like the others have said, you have been on the medications just for a short period, I am sure like the rest of us, you hate taking pills, lol, I take 9 in the mornings and another 6 in the evenings.

But my meds are what keeps me stable and living, so I have to accept that i have to do this.. There is somewhere in the group a thread called reading recommendations, it will offer you a lot of books that you can read, going to your local library will also offer up a whole wealth of books, along with the internet offers a lot of information.

Not to mention the fact that just going through all the posts here you are sure to find others facing the same problems and that have experience on the medication you are taking, are you in therapy?

Hi Wheels,

Welcome. I am glad you have found us. I have tried to go with out meds, before, but after 5 yrs, my illness just got worse. Have you been diagnosed by a psychiatrist? I have bipolar, and I can't take anti depressants. They make me worse. It took time for me to get used to the meds, too. It was because, I was used to coping with my moods, and all of a sudden, I felt calm, and stable. It was very different to not have all of the crisis in my life. My meds slowed me down, alot. Now, I feel great.

Hang out, read, share, vent, and ask as many questions as you like.

You are not alone.

God Bless,Gypsy
