Hi everybody I am 37 years old, 5 ft 3, I have always been extremely healthy. I have competed in bodybuilding and figure competitions (and won) I have been a personal trainer. I discovered last summer that I am bipolar 1 which was a relief to me to know why I have done a lot of the things I've done (3 marriages for one)I was under extreme stress which sent me into a major depression for about 8 months. I am now doing MUCH better, I was on prozac (20mg) for 6 years for what I thought was depression, then AHDD. My problem, during the 6 months of rediscovering myself and figuring out who I really am I gained about 20lbs! Before that I gained about 8 lbs on the prozac which was livable. I quit taking it 6 weeks ago and went on lithium. I have not gained while on the lithium but I can not for the life of me LOSE! It is driving me crazy, if I don't get it off I am going to have to join other support groups. I am taking in fewer calories so I don't understand how to deal with this, if my butt gets any bigger I am going to cry. Anyone had similar experience? My picture was taken 3 years ago and I thought I was a bit chunky then! I'm not even going to put one up now!

Hi Junglebunny,

Welcome. I am glad you are here. I have bipolar 1, and am taking Lithium, and Lamictal. I have gained 30 lbs, too, and can't get it off either. I have been working out at the gym, and eating less, too. I understand what you are going through. The good part is, that Lithium works really well. I am happy to be stable. But the frustration is in the weight gain.

I hope you do well on the Lithium. You look just fine in your picture.

Jump right in. Therev are alot of wonderful people on this sight.

God Bless,Gypsy

OH I've gained FAT, I told myself over the years that the tipping scale and enlarging pants was muscle but I do my body fat % as well and in 6 months I went from 12% to 28% and from a size 3 to a 8-10. My pic is 3 years ago, don't want to get in front of a camera now. I feel GREAT! Except for the depression due to the weight. Granted I probably put a LOT more emphasis on the weight than most people do because of my profession and background. Thanks for the support!

Hi Jungle!!! I, personally do not have a weight problem, but there are members of my family who have gone up and down in weight (REALLY REALLY UP, not so much down) for years and years yo-yo ing like my moods. BUT I DO have concerns about medication and weight gain. My pdoc told me that the average person taking lithium gains 8-25 pounds during the course of their treatment. She is fully aware that if I started gaining that kind of weight, I would probably stop taking the meds. So, she prescribed Lamictal, which has 0% chance of weight gain as a side effect (of course it does carry the risk of other side effects; the most serious being a rash that can lead to a serious medical condition, but there's only a small # of reported cases) Talk to your doc, and see if he/she thinks you are a candidate for Lamictal.... Good Luck!!! P.s..... Your pic is lovely; it looks like a cruise brochure to me!!! lol

JW, my wife had weight gain with several medications. She is trying to get the weight off too. One of the things that adds to the weight gain is the depression, one is usually less active durring these periods.

Each person reacts to the medications differently, talk to the pdoc if you are having problems with any of the meds.

I know that your profession and background are the reason for your great attention to weight but taking care of your stability first seems like the greater priority.

Glad you have joined us. Pull up a chair and join in anywhere.

GOD BLESS

RED

thanks for the words, tell your wife I have lots of weight loss input- in general- aside from what the meds are putting/keeping on us. Fortunately my husband does not mind the extra weight but if I can't stand it then I can't accept it.
