I have had a really hard time coping with some life issues lately so I saw my psychiatrist day before yesterday. During the course of our conversations, I mentioned that I was a member of this site. Her response was to recommend that I stop getting advice from peers and to read some medical journals.

I just wonder if any of you have talked to your Drs. about this and what they have said.

Thanks,

DC

Dear DC with all due respect i think your doctor is way off base with this one...of course, you have to evaluate things for yourself. Nothing against your doctor but, they are human...I haven't read anything since I have been on this site but, good positive reinforcement for being healthy mentally....I have see where several people's doctors recommend the site to their patients...

I just thought of something to add...DC...sometimes doctor's do not like things over which they have no control in their patient's lives. Perhaps you could give the doc the website address and doc could evaluate what a positve addition to your well-being this site is.

I am perplexed at the reasoning behind the doctor saying this???

My son's doctor was very supportive of this site. He was glad there was a well monitored place to go which helped to deal with the day to day issues of bipolar disease....

Hi DC, I told my doc about this site and she was very impressed even ask me for the address for other patients. Don't think of leaving us because of a misguided doc.

Thank you for responding, Norma.

I don't get it either????

I know from reading here that a lot of folks are in therapy or go to support group meeting regularly. Neither my former pdoc or my current one have ever reommended these for me. On average, I do pretty well on my own with medications. But, some days I could really use folks to talk to who understand, from personal experience, what I live with daily. Her reaction really has me stumped.

She is actually a very good pdoc. The course of treatment she has put me on for maintenance has done very well for me. I am just in the middle of some very big stressors, and having problems because of it.

Speaking of problems. I think the new dosage of meds I am on is causing some paranoia. As examples: I think my husband is going to leave me soon, I think dogs are planning to run away, and I think everyone on this site dislikes me. These thoughts just started happening to me last night. All she did was increase the dosage on Trileptal. That should not cause this to happen??? Is this just a stress reaction? Stress is a big trigger for the psychotic portion of my illness, but why would it start AFTER a med change?

This is all very confusing.

Thanks again, Norma. You are a dear person

DC

I think of myself as pretty smart and I have attempted to read medical journals.......they don't make much sense to me. But on this site I have learned a lot!! Experience, strength and hope is not something that you can get from a medical journal.

DEAR DC...med changes can make that happen...if it worsend call doc...

to reassure you, I think the same thing about my dogs...I locked Lucky up in the house this morning because he had a funny look about him and has been out several nights doing God knows what....

I think you are great and so do a lot of people on this site...you are fine...just a little paranoid...and like I said if it worses tell doc...and also tell doc that the people on the site...said to call the doc about it. Maybe doc is just confused as to what goes on here.

You stay with us..and know you are accepted for who you are...and we care about you...hugs, Norma

Thank you all for the support and advice. I find my time here and sharing to be invaluable. I doubt that I will leave over this. I just needed to hear that there are Drs. out there who support this effort. I will share a bit with her about the good people I have met here and how it makes me feel to share and *try* to help others.

bejeweled, I know what you mean about medical journals. I'm pretty bright and am very close to having BS, and I still get lost when I try to read the inserts that come with medications. I can't imagine how hard it must be to sort through a journal.

Norma, thank you for the reassurances. It is an odd thing. When I get like this, there is always one small part of my mind that just sits back and says, "You know, this is just so very wrong. Cut out the stupid thoughts." I try to focus on that side of it instead of the paranoid part. Most of the time I am successful, but I have such an overwhelming fear of another psychotic break that sometimes I just panic. Thank you for reminding me that things are going to be ok.

edited for accuracy. Darn these med changes

I can remember having that fear of a psychotic break again...it is so hard to tell if it is happening...when my son had his recently he looked at me and asked an off the wall question...and then he said "i am really out of it" just broke my heart...i said "oh, yeah, you are out there, but we are going to get help right now" and we went to the hospital...once he had some anti-psychotic in him he was much better.

I have that fear of getting psychotic again...I depend on those around me to tell me when I am getting out there a little. As long as I don't drink alcolol i am fine...it seems like the alcohol makes me manic.

We are here for you DC...

Dream Chaser - And your doctor thinks YOU'RE the crazy one??? I have two words for her: cuckoo! cuckoo! LOL IN MY OPINION, you should use whatever support system you need to in order to acquire a little peace of mind. Take what applies to you and leave the rest is a good motto.
