I hate to sound ignorant or naive but I tried to research and couldn't find answers so I thought I'd ask in this forum. Out of curiousity, do bipolar parents automatically have bipolar children? Not sure how this works I know sometimes genetic traits skip generations so I was wondering if anyone knew. Thanks.

Welcome...Cat, I have bipolar disease and have two biological children...one has bipolar and the other doesn't. I think genetic research on the issue is still gathering information.

And the diagnosis of bipolar disease is sometimes difficult to make. Research on the subject is relatively new...in the last few decades. Add that to the fact a lot of people with bipolar disease are either in denial of the fact they have it or don't want people to know they have it. So getting data from people is difficult.

Hi Cat....I have often wondered the same thing. I have 2 children ages 18 and 14 and my father said he saw signs in my son but I don't really see it. My paternal grandmother was bi-polar and my mom was real bad bi-polar so I have a double wamy when it comes to genetics.

Hi Cat,

I have bipolar, and so does my 11 yr old son. My dad has it, too.

But, My 3 other kids don't have it, and neither do my 3 siblings. My grandparents don't have it, and neither does my mom. I also have alcaholism, and so does my dad, and all of my generation on my mom's side. My mom doesn't have this either, and neither do my grandparents.

So, my opinion is that we don't automatically get this disease. I think it's like any other genetic disease, some will get it some wont.

I think the important thing is, if you see it in yourself and in your children, get it treated ASAP. That's what I am doing with my 11 year old. My 7 yr old daughter is being tested for it too, right now.

I am fortunate, that I have it, and I know how to get help. I can now help my kids.

God Bless,Gypsy

I have a family history much like yours. I am BP I> my dad is severe BP, but in denial. hes an alcoholic. Mom has mental issues . Both parents treid to commit suicide at one point, my mom tried it in front of me. All my aunts on my dad's side are on some type of med for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc. several cousins also. Mom's side has my grandma who had Electric Shock Therapy. I guess it is genetic. My question is: how did u know your son was BP so young??? how do docs "test" for that so young??? My baby has autism, but ive been warned he may also later have BP.

mon to answer your ?s i think it's more awareness than anything.

what i've been told is there is a genetic disposition to bp, just as there is toward addiction. but like Norma said, bp is not diagnosed as often as it should.

i want you to be crazy
because you're boring baby when you're sane
