Hey, I was wondering if anyone with BPII has or had experienced rapid cycling while being on a mood stablizer combined with an antidepressant? I have been dosing up on my Lamictal and have been on Wellbutrin as well. My doc is finally starting to wene me off the wellbutrin, and I'm just hoping this will stop the cycling. It seemed like I am good for a week to a week and a half thn bad for 5-7 days. It's crushing because when you think you've finally found the answer coming, down really sucks. If anyone has any info I'm very curious to hear what you have to say!

I have bipolar 1, and have rapid cycling. I can't take any antidepressants. They make me worse. I can relate to the hope of finding the right meds, and then you start cycling again. I just went through that. I am on good meds, but, still have an episode once in a while. I have a meds for emergencies, that, I can use when, I start having an episode.

My soon to be ex also has rapid cycling and is on 200 mg of Lamictal and 150 mg of Wellbutrin. He also has mixed episodes. Gypsy, you know his story. Do you think the combo of meds could be making things worse or do you think it might be some of his self-medicating? Does the Wellbutrin make things worse?

Buhlir,

I personally can't take antidepressants, including Welbutrin. But, some people can. It's good your ex is on meds. Is this new? If he is having manic episodes, inspite of being on meds, his meds are probably not working.

Self medicating is not good, either. It can make the meds not work as well.

Oh Gypsy...where do I start? We tried to reconcile again (unsuccessfully again) and I found out that he is abusing alcohol and drugs (besides marijuana, I don't know which others) . I'm guessing that could cause him some problems too. He left a bottle with a couple lamictal in it here and it appears he may be cutting his pills in half again. The bottle of Wellbutrin is pretty full so who knows if he is taking them. At this point I don't know if he is taking any meds at all since he isn't here and his meds are.

buhlir-you must be so worried. i'm sorry you're going through this. it seems like it never ends, doesn't it. you have to try to remember that no matter how much you care, he has to be responsible for his own recovery, if that's what he chooses. you take care of you, hard as that is.

scorpio-i am bp but tend more towards the depressive. however, some anti-depressants put me into manic. now i take wellbutrin with adderall, which they use to boost the effectiveness of the wellbutrin and also keep me even. i don't know why it works, but it does. it's been the most stable i've felt since being diagnosed 7 years ago and being medicated, not medicated and self medicated...lol. good luck finding the right combo for you.

Scorpio05 - I am BP1 rapid cycling, and take Lamictal. 6 years ago, my family doctor thought my symptoms were due to a serious case of PMS (he was wrong, of course, but what else is new? LOL) and prescribed Wellbutrin. My psychiatrist tells me that it's very possible that the Wellbutrin is what caused my rapid cycling... apparently, it's pretty common for anti-depressants to worsen your symptoms or decrease the periods of stability between cycles. You should talk to your doctor about your concerns. Good luck!

Thats funny because I used to be on Wellbutrin and Adderal for years...but the Lamictal is woking much beter. My doc is trying to get me off Wellbutrin and hopefully that wil stop the cycling. Is's so funny how these drugs work so differently for each person.

Do you know if Lamictal and Adderall can betaken together without serious side effects?
