I tell people when is is appropriate in the conversation. And they do get a funny look in their eyes...I just smile...but, that is me. Everyone has to deal with it in their own way.

I am literally nauseated after reading about your experience. Have people become so jaded that their ignorant assumptions have ENTIRELY taken the place of reason and empathy???? ESPECIALLY SOMEONE IN THE HEALTHCARE FIELD????? It's scary to think that our lives could literally be placed in the hands of a person who obviously has so much contempt for us. Her backwards thinking could easily have led to some kind of horrible medical mishap. If I were you, I would seriously consider reporting her....(not sure who I'd report her TO, but there's gotta be somebody!!!) This woman does not deserve to be in the business of saving a life when she obviously has no respect for it. UGH!!!! Sickening.

i'm sorry and sickened that this happened to you. you were being judged based on something that wasn't even relevant to the situation. you told her you were bp and instead of asking about your meds and figuring out what was going on, she decided you were a crazy and must have been lying about drinking. shame on her and f--- her!!! write a letter, please. maybe they will do some further training with their people based on what you say and someone else won't go through this. i'm so glad you're ok now.

Hello Everyone. Thank you for the support, now I don't feel like I was just over reacting. My sister(that works at the hosp) went to her boss about it. The two of them composed a brief but potent letter and sent it to the director of medic division. No response yet. We thought it would have a little more efffective response coming from someone else within the administrative department. By the way did anyone know that very low potassium can cause a disoriented state of mind---now you do. Thank you again.

Hey, MMM glad you got a letter sent...the only way they will know is if someone says something...there are lots of things that can cause disorientation, low potassium, heat stroke, dehydration, diabetes, bipolar mania. I used to work in ICU and was taught early on to record things as "it seems like yada yada" and not give a definitive diagnosis.

That way it shows it is just my observation.

I am big on the public treating us just like everyone else...and bipolar disease is just another medical condition. One day it will be better...a war is won each battle at a time. And in my opinion this is a war against ignorance and prejudice...Pass the ammunition full speed ahead...

Just in case any one was interested, this is the response to the letter that was sent. I'm satisfied.

I was so sorry to hear about the negative experience that your family had with our staff. I know that Scott has already responded to you and please rest assured that he immediately put it on the top priority for Kim to investigate. The core issue that was part of your sister’s experience was how individuals are treated that have mental health issues noted in their medical history. As a former psych nurse, this whole topic is close to my heart and I regularly lecture to students about the need to avoid tunnel vision and pre-judging all patients, but especially those with mental health challenges. Please convey to your family that we take this event seriously and the very real concerns of those involved will be strongly presented to the involved individuals.

My sister also received a phone call from this Kim. Said that both my sister and I deserved more than an email response but a personal phone call to convey how sincerely sorry she was. She herself has a family member that has a mental condition and understands both the anger and frustration the situation caused.

I don't want anyone in trouble for this, just to learn from it.

Thought you'd might be curious.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Looks like the issue was addressed. And someone learned from it. Each time we stand up for ourselves and others it makes it better for all of us.
