Hello Everyone,

I was diagnosed with bipolar July of last year and have been doing research on the web about my illness. I rarely come across any positive feedback about medications and treatment. Can anyone give me some positive reinforcement about the illness and their own success story? I would love to hear from you!

Hi rsc,

I have had a good experience with getting on meds. It can be frustrating to find the right combo, but, just getting on meds was such a relief.

I felt better immediately. It took time to get more stable, and for them to be consistant. Over time, they have enabled me to get closer to my family the fears have lessened. I can slow down and communicate with friends. I can get organized, and pay attention to detail when, I am doing projects. I don't get as frustrated, and react to things. I don't spend so much money, and don't fry my hair from dying it so much. I can actually sit, and watch a movie. I am not afraid to leave the house due to my anxiety, and depression. In other words, my illness doesn't get in the way of me living my life.

I still have cycles, and irritability, but with meds, and guidance from a therapist, and pdoc, I can manage my symptoms better.

God Bless,Gypsy

If I had to guess I would say most of what you are seeing it peoples experiences on different meds while they were still trying to find the right cocktail. Not every medication works the same for everyone and since everyones situations is different there are countless combinations of meds possible and it may take some time and some frustration to find what is best for you. The best thing is to make sure that you have a doctor that listens to you and that you are not afraid to ask questions and that doesn't mind taking the time to go over meds and their side effects or anything else about your diagnosis with you. So, if you can work with your doctor and grit your teeth and fight your way through the medication trials and errors then you're off to a good start. But while going through all of this I have learned a lot about myself, both good and bad things, but the good things give you hope and the bad things are learning experiences and knowing that certain things were bad may be able to help repair relationships that may have been hurt by things that you have done in the past (like when I was in my manic phase). I don't know if it does but i hope that helps a bit.

I’ve decided that the key to happiness is low expectations.

it's so true about it taking time to find the right cocktail. for those of us who have, though, you will hear us "brag" about what our meds are doing for us. i take abilify, klonopin, adderall, wellbutrin. it's finally a combination i have found that makes my illness so much more manageable. my combo is very atypical. it's so true what dstar says that you have to find a doc who's willing to go "out of the box" and try new things that might be different than what works for most or even some of his/her other patients. i found that doctor and i've never felt better.

best of luck and peace-

The meds, that have worked for me are Lamictal, Lithium, and Buspar. I also have hydroxyzine for when my anxiety is really bad. I also have Zyprexa as an as needed med.

I have tried Abilify, which, I liked. Geodon, Trileptal, Ativan,Topamax,Depakote, and Seroquel. I have tried every antidepressant, they have, and I can't take them. They make me really nuts.

I have bipolar 1,with rapid cycling, with psychotic features. I tend to have really bad mania. It can be very frustrating, because it can be really hard to treat. I have a really sensitive system, too.

Welcome rsc,

I currently take Abilify, Lamictal and Trileptal. They are a great coctail for me, but it took me a lot of trial and error to get to this point. The frustration is well worth it. It is amazing with the right coctail can do for you. Dstar makes a very good point about finding a pdoc you feel comfortable with and who will actually listen to you. I didn't do that in the beginning so it took a long time to find the right meds for me.

Good luck. Please keep us posted on your progress, and come here anytime you want to talk, vent or just share a laugh and a hug.
