I am looking for some advice. Some of you may already know me, but for those that don't. I am the wife of a bipolar husband. During our twelve year marriage he has had a very hard time holding down a job. Never keeping one for more than a year. We are contemplating signing him up to try to get disability. My question though, is how should we go about it? Should we just fill out the paperwork, or should we talk to his doctor about it first? Anyone have any advice or personal experience??

Hello,

I too am a wife of a bi polar husband. How's your world? Have you had thoughts of leaving him because the thought of staying and dealing with this the rest of your life is exhausting and depressing? What makes you keep going?

whenever you do apply and it doesn't matter which way, they will automatically contact any doctors, psychs, and therapists that your husband has seen. make sure you list every job, every doctor. and it does sound like he would be a canidate for disability. Good luck to you in this process.

And this is coming from personal experience.

BE BLESSED!

Hi,

It can take up to 2 yrs, or more. It depends. Its different for everyone. I am on my appeal process, and than if they deny that, I go to a hearing in front of a judge. It can take awhile for the hearing. I was able to get a lawyer, which really helped.

God bless, Gypsy

hello yes it can take up to 2 yrs or more . its been my experience with it to have to get a lawyer.most times they will deny you at least twice before allowing a hearing to state you're case.(depending on state, reason for applying, age of applicant and such) if you have not read up about what all you may be eligiable for i say go do that before you apply.. i know is SSI and Disability he may be elgible for both .save ALL doctor bills and any documents at all from them about hubbys condition.would be good to have them write a letter for you to send with the application.(make copies of these to keep also)

its been yrs for me since i applied so unsure if they remain as strict but if you have these things already then you will be prepared and have no delays.

Good luck i hope you have no trouble with it, feel free to post back if do with questions.. if i know how to get around it or make it easier will tell

my thoughts are with you,

kle

Thanks for everyones comments. My husband has another doctors appointment in about two weeks so I think I am going to wait and talk to him about it. See what his oppinion is and if he will support us.

This is off the subject line, but I feel like this has consumed every aspect of my life. I want to help my husband. I love him. I don't want to see him hurt. I don't want him to be hurtful to me or the kids anymore.....and I believe we are on the right track. Getting meds and counseling, but it is almost like I am obsessed with it. I want to learn everything about it....so I know "yes, he is bipolar", or "yes, but he has something else too" or "no, it's not bipolar at all". I am constantly analizing every move my husband makes....Could that be a sign of mania or depression. Anyway....had to get that out. Sorry for getting off track, just needed to express myself a little. I really want to help my husband so badly!! For him, our kids, our family!!

DC121,

Of course you should talk to your doc about it. That will help you more than anything, because when the judge asks for the mental health records, your docs opinion on his illness will help him make the decision, hopefully in your husbands favor.

You might as well go down and fill out the paperwork, before or after , it doesn't matter. It may take a very long time, months or even years to get disability. But the sooner the better .

You might want to get a lawyer as well. You can find one at no cost unless you do win socail security then he gets a percentage because lets say it would take a couple of years. SS disabitlity will pay from the first time you applied. That is called back pay.

Goodluck!

Disability is so hard for me to understand. I hear of so many that have to fight for it and have two siblings that had to fight to get theirs. They have the same diagnosis as I have but for some reason mine went thru in four months. At first it made me feel as if I was really messed up if they approved it the first time around. I do understand that at the time I finally applied that I had been under the care of 4 different pschyciatrist and they had all come up with the same diagnosis. I feel that may have played a role in mine going thru easier than most.

It is the truth. The more of phsyciatrists and other docs, therapists , hospitalizations you have you can get in faster..... Thats why it is important to tell your doc everything and make sure you ask him or her to help you by being very specific in their opinions and writing.... My doc even tried to help by writing a short statement that she felt I wasn't capable at the time of getting the job.
