The teenager who is 17 has no psychotic feature just severe mood swing...does anyone know what a parent cant do to force them to take their meds??? any suggestions! Hey Kelli, you can't force a person to take their meds, they have to want too, if she is not getting good support out of her doctor, then I recommend telling that doctor where he can go, and getting a new one.

I've suffered with the severe moodswings most of my life, it got to the point that I just accepted them as normal, and didn't seek help for the depression till about 8 years ago, after having meds to quit working on me, and the depression not getting any better, I started doing the research that finally lead me to my DX, have her parents get her some books to read that will help her to understand that she is bipolar, she is probably in denial and disbelief, even at 17, she doesn't want to be any different than her peers.

When my son was diagnosed he was 14 yrs...he took meds mostly because I gave them to him and there was no chance to say no...he was just expected to do it. Gradually he began to take responsibility for taking meds when he was about 18 yrs...teenagers are difficult to deal with as parents...if she refused meds it makes it worse. I took my daughter who is not bipolar to a counselor at that age for behavior problems and that helped a lot with her...getting a teenage a good counselor they can relate to is a great help...

Hi Kimimi,

I have had bipolar since, I was 10 yrs old, and was diagnosed the first time when, I was 14 yrs old. I wouldn't take meds until last year.

My som is 10, and just getting treated for bipolar. He wouldn't take his meds, because he didn't like the way he felt. He would lie about taking them. We have a great pdoc who told him very sternly to take his meds. He likes the mania. We now have stand next to him, and make sure he takes his meds. We also have support from the teacher.

She calls me when she suspects he hasn't taken his meds.

WE have also given him consequences for it, and keep talking to him about his behavior, and how it effects his life, and the people around him.

When he is older, it might be harder, and he might have to make the decision for himself.

God Bless,Gypsy
